Disney's newest princess, Moana, tells the story of a young Polynesian woman fighting to know and follow her destiny. It's a true tale of self-discovery; no love interest to be found. At the beginning of the movie, Moana sings, "See the line where the sky meets the sea? It calls me," and she chases that calling throughout the plot. By sticking up for herself, trusting her intuition, and reclaiming the knowledge of her ancestors, Moana comes into her power. Read on for eleven gems from my new favorite, fem-powered, Disney princess (er-- daughter of the chief, according to Moana herself):
1. "I am everything I've learned and more."
2. "You've come so far."
3. "The ocean chose you for a reason."
4. "Nothing on earth can silence the quiet voice still inside you."
5. "Come what may, I know the way."
6. "Sometimes our strengths lie beneath the surface."
7. "[They] aren't the ones who make you, you are."
8. "Muscle up, buttercup."
9. "I can lead with pride, I can make us strong."
10. "Sometimes the world seems against you-- the journey may leave a scar. But scars can heal and reveal just where you are."
11. "You know who you are."
At the end of the movie, Moana sings, "The call isn't out there at all, it's inside me." In this line, she solidifies something that every girl ought to know and trust: everything you need is already within you. So stand tall, proud, and confident like the strong woman you are.
