I have spent 15 of the 20 years of my life in school, and with each new semester, the bundle of emotions typically embodied by the word "anticipation" never dissipates. Anticipation is a blanket term used for the combination of excited and nervous feelings which come with starting something new that is hard to envision until it's actually being experienced. I can still recall how anxious I felt getting ready for my very first day of kindergarten. At the time, I was unaware that no matter how many times I would undergo this routine of preparing for an uncharted chapter of my life, I would be unable to suppress the slightly elevated heart rate and stomach butterflies which come with these events.
Regardless of the fact that starting something new undoubtedly involves some form of anxiety, in the end, the thrill of beginning something unpredictable outweighs the fear and uncertainty. Beginning new adventures and being open to trying new things is courageous and something to be proud of. Pushing oneself to keep moving forward into unknown territory can be daunting, but it remains one of life's constants. Perhaps simply understanding that reality can be of assurance when unfamiliar encounters seem intimidating.
Although I have highlighted the positives of anticipating upcoming opportunities, there is great importance in engaging in plenty of self-care during transitional times. Self-care has different meanings depending on the person. This can mean attending regular therapy appointments, taking an hour each day to watch Netflix, exercising regularly, enjoying a pampering manicure or mask, and any number of other activities which allow time for rest and maintenance. Monitoring mental and physical wellness in times of change is essential, since they often cause normal, healthy routines to unknowingly go by the wayside. For some, self-care means going out on Friday nights with friends. Others need alone time to veg out without social activity. Depending on your personality and current situation, these needs may differ significantly, but must be met to stay in good health. What is important is that you are especially attentive to your well-being when starting a new semester, job, activity, and so on. Retaining your own personal wellness is always of the utmost importance.
Maya Angelou's words inspire me during turbulent, unpredictable times: "My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style." Best wishes to students beginning the spring semester and to everyone else embarking on a journey, no matter how small it may seem.
