Eight benefits of swimming in your body and in your mind

We have always heard that swimming is the most complete sport, and it is because it is an aerobic exercise in which two-thirds of the muscles of the body are involved, enhancing strength, endurance and flexibility. In addition, it can be practiced at any age, the risk of injury is lower and its usual practice has benefits for the body in the medium and long term. The best thing is that it adapts to different levels of form, ideal for those who are starting and very complete exercise for regular athletes, either in the pool or in open water. Swimming is very good for our body and mind health.

Let's see some of these benefits:

1. Produces low impact on bones and joints

By immersing our body in water for sports, it "weighs less", is governed by the principle of buoyancy and does not receive the impact of asphalt or hard surfaces that it faces in other sports. That way, the joints wear less and are better preserved.

2. Greater flexibility and elasticity

When swimming, we use most of the muscle groups of our body, the upper and lower body as well as the trunk and head, so the joints are more flexible and the muscles are toned and strengthened, especially those of the back. That is why it is a highly recommended exercise for those suffering from hernias, low back pain or hip problems.

3. Burn fat

In optimal conditions and according to the intensity at which it is practiced, with swimming you can burn between 500 and 600 calories per hour. That is why it is common to be incorporated into the routines of those who begin a weight loss program.

4. Fight chronic diseases such as asthma, diabetes or cholesterol

Being an aerobic exercise, of low intensity but that develops over longer periods of time, helps lower blood cholesterol levels and produces greater insulin sensitivity, lowering blood glucose levels.

5. Improvement of the respiratory system and increased lung capacity

Learning to breathe is the first step to enjoy swimming, with each stroke and with each air intake the respiratory system is favored.

6. Neural and cognitive benefits

When swimming we start the two cerebral hemispheres and the four lobes of the brain which seems to lead to greater cognition, in addition, there are neuronal bonds and greater activation of the brain that receives more oxygen.

7. Cardiorespiratory benefits

Swimming improves oxygen consumption by up to 10% and the heart can boost blood up to 18% more. This reverts to better circulation as it decreases heart rate, while respiratory exercises involve an increase in cardiorespiratory resistance.

8. Psychological benefits

By immersing ourselves in the water and concentrating on the breath, an immediate effect is produced: the body relaxes and the sensation of stress is reduced, and the symptoms of depression improve.

As we mentioned in the article on the euphoria of the runner, endorphins are released with sports practice that enhances a positive attitude, the feeling of well-being takes over the athlete and tensions are released.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
