While the end of the semester is approaching, so is the summer season. And, as we all know, with warmer weather comes the beach, and with the beach come tank tops and shorts and bikinis. Although I am sure we would love to all dedicate our time to physical activity and nutritious food shopping and preparation, there is less time than ever for these things as students. Unfortunately, we will be spending most of our time indoors to prepare all final projects and study for final exams. Lucky for you, there are some quick and easy tips you can follow to improve your health and prepare for the summer weather. Granted, diet and exercise are the most important factors in our overall health, but these pointers will give you a great starting point. And, once finals are over, you can regularly hit your favorite workout spot!
1. Eat breakfast.
Breakfast really is the most important meal of the day. Eating a wholesome breakfast will provide you with the energy you need to have a productive day. You will be able to focus better in class rather than being preoccupied with how tired or hungry you are feeling. If you're in a rush, grab a yogurt or fruit cup rather than a greasy breakfast sandwich or doughnut.
2. Drink water.
Don't waste calories on your beverage choices! Not only are sodas, diet sodas and caffeinated beverages full of calories and fake sugars, they have no benefit to your health. Drinking water has endless health benefits, and sticking to water is an easy way to cut out pointless calories from your day. Keep a water bottle with you whenever you leave the house so you never have an excuse!
3. Ditch the late-night snacking.
Late-night snacking is so tempting, especially when you are up late doing homework and studying. Don't give in! Having a post-dinner snack is okay, but do not eat late at night. Our metabolisms are not prepared for all this activity at night, and everything we eat should be given ample time to be digested. Instead of snacking, try getting to bed earlier — it is much more beneficial.
4. Walk.
Next time you want to take the bus somewhere or drive: don't. Walk whenever you can, wherever you can. Walk to class (if a bus isn't required), walk to your friend's house and walk for exercise. If you have little time to get to the gym, walking will give you some physical activity for the day.
5. Cut down on processed foods.
If you are hungry and need to grab something on the go, make sure you choose something healthy. Instead of reaching for the bag of chips or pack of cookies, do yourself a favor and go for fruits or vegetables instead. If fresh fruits and veggies aren't available, choose something like hummus and crackers. The better you eat, the better you will feel!
