While drug store makeup may be underrated among people such as beauty bloggers, so many people (especially me) love the options available at CVS, Target, Walgreens, etc. Makeup is a hot topic these days, but not many people are talking about whether or not their makeup is cruelty-free. Millions of animals are tested on and killed every year. Cruelty-free makeup includes makeup that is not tested on animals or made of anything from animals.
How To Know If Your Makeup Is Cruelty-Free:
A tale-tale sign of whether brands are cruelty-free or not is to find out if the item is vegan. Vegan makeup brands clearly state on the label that they are vegan or if that specific item is vegan; they are almost always cruelty-free (very few aren't). Another way to tell is to look on the back of the package usually to see if there is a small leaping bunny logo. If you see the bunny on the bottle then that means that there was no animal testing used throughout any of the processing. Any of the logos below can be found on vegan and/or cruelty-free makeup packages.
The following cruelty-free brands can be found in a drug store near you.
1. NYX Cosmetics
NYX Cosmetics is PETA certified but their owner, L'Oreal, is not. NYX Cosmetics offers very affordable, highly pigmented makeup with a wide range of shades.
2. Wet N Wild
Wet N Wild is PETA certified. If you're on a tight budget but can't stop buying, then Wet N Wild is perfect for you.
3. E.L.F.
e.l.f. has signed PETA's cruelty-free pledge and have made all of their products vegan with the exception of a few animal hair brushes.
4. Burt's Bees
You can find the leaping bunny on all of their products and they do not test on animals. However, they are owned by Clorox which isn't cruelty-free. If you're someone with dry skin or cracked lips then you should head over to the store and grab Burt's Bees moisturizing lotions and balms.
5. Hard Candy
Hard Candy is cruelty-free and is not sold or made in China. They offer a wide variety of affordable makeup in hard to miss packaging.
6. Yes To
Yes To offers cruelty-free skin creams, face masks and makeup wipes. While they may be a little pricier than other brands, they are gentle on skin and don't touch animal skin.
