Most odd ideas start with Buzzfeed and this is no exception. Recently the news site released a video featuring a couple buying each other clothing and dressing them for a week. The women had two distinct styles but wore fairly similar sizes. We tried the same thing, except with the added challenge of being two very odd and distinctive sizes.
Alivia: I'm fairly small to put it simply, I have fairly conventional measurements on my top half (34"-27"), but my bottom half gets a little odd (40"). Partly because of this I'm drawn to dresses and skirts much more than pants, in fact for about two years I only wore pants for costumes. I like to dress up most of the time and if I'm going outside of my room at all I'm probably throwing on a dress.
For Najy, I wanted to see her dress up more, if there's one thing she knows I'm not into it's leggings and she wears them quite a bit. Let's just say she did not get to wear any this week. I wanted to only buy her things that I would wear myself. So a lot of the new pieces are more dressy than most of her wardrobe and overall the stuff she wore are things she would pretty much never throw on a daily basis.
Najy: There is no way to mince words with this - I am busty, I am well endowed on the top half, my bra size is a 38DDD. I am also at that awkward place in between plus-sized and so-called regular sized. I can comfortably shop at both Charlotte Ruse and Torrid. My sizing ranges anywhere from 11-16/Large-2x. I have gotten quite used to the trial and error of shopping for my size since the beginning of high school.
For Alivia, I wanted to put her in things I would wear or I wish I could wear. Half of the outfits I put her in were cute-casual outfits reminiscent of my style of dress. The other half were outfits I thought would flatter her figure in ways that do not flatter mine. I love Alivia's style, but I wanted to push it in directions it might not usually go to. I also wanted to see Alivia play with makeup a bit. She has a daily routine she likes to stick to when it comes to makeup, but I wanted to see her go away from that for a bit, so there were a few days I had her wear some out-of-the-norm eyeliner and lipgloss.
Day 1: Monday
Alivia: I was 100% about this outfit, the dress is something I would have picked out for myself had I seen it. To top it off it goes perfectly with my heels. But I'm god awful at eyeliner, particularly winged eyeliner (and with a floppy tip, yikes), so that looks a little funny.
Najy: Aside from the shoes, I have worn this exact outfits on multiple occasions before. I love this dress, but I usually wear it for dances and going out, so at first, it did feel a little odd to wear it to Honors Convocation, but by end of the day, I realized this outfit was a lot more versatile than I had given it credit for.
Day 2: Tuesday
Alivia: Ok, the top is pretty cute, I'll give this outfit that. I don't love the green pants with the eggshell blue but I'm notoriously picky about color combinations so that's not shocking.
Najy: This dress is a little more dressy than the dresses I tend to wear on a day-to-day basis. Without Alivia's influence, I probably would reserve this dress for semi-formal occasions only. However, I enjoyed wearing this dress casually. I got a lot of compliments on it which has me considering putting it into my casual dress roster.
Day 3: Wednesday
Alivia: I was high-key annoyed by this outfit. It just felt too casual, ya know? I love Fall Out Boy a lot and all, but if I'm going to wear a band shirt, I'm going to really dress it up. Also why the nude flats?
Najy: I dress like this about once a week. In my opinion, adding a skirt does dress up the Fall Out Boy shirt. At least for me anyway. I thought this was the perfect level of casual; bandom-chic. Also, nude flats totally go with everything.
Najy: I. Hated. This. Outfit. I never wear peplum tops, I feel like they draw attention to all of my worst assets. To make matters worse, the peplum top was paired with a skirt I only wear when I have to dress business casual. I felt like I went through the whole day one shoe change away from walking into a job interview. While the combat boots did make this look a little more casual, this combination of clothes is never going on my body again.
Alivia: That wasn't business casual, at least that's not how i define it. I liked the top a lot, the flowers were adorable and had cute pops of pink and purple. The skirt was a little flimsy I guess, if I were wearing it myself I would have worn a form-fitting black skirt, but Najy probably would have hated that even more. Also, last I checked, combat boots were not business casual...
Day 4: Thursday
Alivia: I dislike spaghetti straps, a lot. I also felt like I was wearing a flag when I first tried on the dress... The being said, I actually liked the outfit. The hat probably makes the look, but overall it was one of my favorites and that was a big surprise to me.
Najy: I love this outfit so much. It was probably my favorite outfit of the week. I can totally see myself in this outfit again. I think this look was probably the best combination of my style and Alivia's style. 10/10 would recommend.
Day 5: Friday
Alivia: The dress resembles a lot of things I already owned but was a tad short for me. Like I said, the bottom half of me is a bit weird, and the dress is cute but doesn't work super well with that. I'd probably wear it with tights if I wore it again.
Najy: Prior to our shopping day for the challenge, I had never found a romper that fit me. Unfortunately for me, Alivia found about four rompers that fit me at Target. While this was definitely the cutest romper I tried on, it just felt very odd to wear. It is far shorter than most of my dresses and shorts. The top half was strangely the least of my concern in my romper. The bottom half being more restrictive than a dress yet freer than most of my shorts was a combination I am not used to. Also, in case you didn't know, the name is misleading. Romping around the City Museum in this romper caused some unpredictable injuries.
Alivia: I can't fit properly into rompers ok? Let a girl live. Also, how would I know rompers aren't good active wear? I've never worn one.
Day 6: Saturday
Alivia: Ok I'm gonna come out and say it this outfit sucked, a lot. Sure the photo doesn't look too bad but the shirt was sheer and that was just the first of a few problems. I had to wear my matching bralette to match the sheer shirt and it was super uncomfortable (and did I mention itchy?). And the skirt was a bit of a nightmare because it was white and formfitting... don't think I need to elaborate there. Bottom line, I love my girlfriend, but I'm never wearing this combo again.
Najy: I apologize for the discomfort, but I was just living vicariously through you. I don't feel comfortable in tight skirts, but you look absolutely amazing in them. I wear sheer tops all the time, so I didn't really see the issue there. I love you too, but I also really loved this outfit.
Najy: This dress had sadly been in the back of my closet waiting for a sunny day to come out and play. The Saturday of our challenge ended up being that day. I am so glad Alivia put me in this dress again because I honestly forgot how much I loved this dress.
Day 7: Sunday
Alivia: This was cute, and probably the favorite (although day 1 was really close as well). I love dresses with collars and the fact that the collar and heels matched made me super happy.
Najy: I loved this skirt (and I know Alivia did too) I probably wouldn't have paired it with that top on my own, but I ended up enjoying this look.
Alivia: All in all, this wasn't a bad experience for me, but I'm sticking to my picks. If anything, I may consult my girlfriend more, but I usually know what I like pretty quickly.
Najy: I enjoyed this experience. I definitely learned that while my girlfriend and I are both fashionable people, our fashion senses are fairly different, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. I am pretty sure I got more compliments this week than I had in a while, so my girlfriend knows what she is doing.
