Is The Dress Code Really That Bad?

Girls' bodies are so sexualized that they can't even wear a strappy top without their education being compromised.

When talking about dress code among students, the first thing that comes up is how unfair it is. Most of the girls agree that school dress code only discriminates against the girls and not boys. The dress code rules are usually harder on the girls than it is on the boys. Should the dress code be so unfair?

School dress codes make girls feel self-conscious, ashamed, and uncomfortable in their own bodies. In school, you are supposed to learn who you are and find your confidence; for girls, it’s quite the opposite. Instead, girls feel shameful and are in constant fear of being called out for the outfit they're wearing. “It oppresses us and makes us feel like we need to be ashamed of our bodies. That they are dirty, inappropriate, and need to be hidden. Dress codes make us feel shameful.”

The message schools send to young women about dress code is disconcerting. For example, a school in the United Kingdom faced a furious storm of backlash in May from parents and students when it announced plans to ban girls from wearing skirts because it made male teachers “uncomfortable.” Multiple schools have dress codes to stop males from being distracted and feeling uncomfortable; however, the message that sends is that what males feel and want is more important than a girl's education.

There is a problem with making a girl feel like her education is less important than males. When a girl is taken out of class on a hot day for wearing a strappy top because she is “distracting” her male classmates, it portrays that his education is prioritized over hers. When a school makes the decision to police female student bodies while turning a blind eye to boys' immaturity and behavior, it sets up a lifelong assumption that sexual violence is inevitable.

Girls shouldn’t feel shameful because boys can’t control themselves. Instead of making girls feel ashamed, maybe we should be teaching boys how to act around girls and be respectful to them. Girls shouldn’t have to miss a full day of school or a class because her clothes are "distracting" boys.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
