9 Things I Don't Understand About Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day holds a special place in the hearts of many, but there are still questions that have yet to be answered about the existence of this day.

On a day that is meant to celebrate love and affection, I find myself questioning why this day even has its own special name. Whether you are single, looking, or completely closed off to any sort of romantic relationship, I think we all have some of the same questions to ask about the existence of Valentine's Day.

1. Why is Valentine's Day actually a day?

Is it too much to ask that we all love each other every day? If (and an emphasis on the "if") I had a significant other, I would want them to treat me that special every day. What makes this day so special? I refuse to allow myself to only love excessively on this one single day.

2. What does chocolate have to do with love?

I see no correlation between love and chocolate, except for the fact that my appetite loves to suggest chocolate. Besides, I associate love with all foods in general, just not chocolate.

3. Why didn't I receive a letter from my secret admirer in my elementary Valentine's Day box?

I waited for years to be able to open my box and to find a pink and red envelope attached to a chocolate rose, but it never came. Not only did this lack of event ignite my questioning of the so-called holiday of love, but it also crushed any dreams I had of an elementary school sweetheart romance.

4. Speaking of my elementary school Valentine's Day box, why didn't my box win the class decorating competition?

After spending four grueling hours of work, I was led straight into a constant cycle of disappointment year after year while continuing to place second in the class competition. I am still vouching for a recount.

5. Who is Saint Valentine? And Cupid?

Is Cupid the same as Saint Valentine or are they totally different? After some deep research, I came to the realization that Saint Valentine was a roman saint that was associated with courtly love or whatever that means. And Cupid? He was just a mythical god with some wings and a bow and arrow.

6. How do you know if you should get your significant other a gift?

"I don't need anything," the significant other claims while you still secretly know that you'll be in deep shit if you don't show up with flowers and some sort of dessert.

7. How unoriginal is it to propose on Valentine's Day?

As cute and romantic as it may seem, the "wedding ring hidden in the bread basket at an expensive restaurant" proposal idea is a little overrated and overly used. Don't get me wrong; it is adorable. At the same time, proposing on a day that is unique to the relationship might be a better plan to follow through with

8. Is going to the movie 50 Shades Darker a good date idea?

The revival looks so much better than the first film, but it just might be the wrong day to go watch it. You don't want to be giving your significant other any ideas. Or maybe you do?

9. How can one holiday make me feel bad about my relationship status?

Should I be ashamed for being single on a day that is meant to celebrate the love between people? I am making the final decision on the answer to that question a no because I love myself and where I am in life.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.
