Disappointment Is Healthy

Disappointment; everyone has experienced it in their life. Whether it was because of something small like the store not having your favorite candy bar you were really craving or something bigger like not getting that job you really wanted, it happens to everyone. It can strike at any age and anytime and I am here to tell you that as much as disappointment can suck, it is something that everyone needs.

Disappointment and how to handle it is a good thing to learn early on in life. I feel like some of our major first disappointments happen around that savage time that is middle school. Turns out your first major crush doesn't feel the same way? Usually they don't let you down as easily as you were hoping, and all you're left with is a big heap of disappointment and awkward. But everyone got over that crush eventually, right? What about that time when you thought you did really really well on a test and just blatantly failed it? Or the time that your friend was supposed to do something with you but ended up going somewhere else with someone else? You were able to push aside that heap of disappointment and other emotions and hold your head high again and move on. Really, this doesn't seem like something that is pivotal in anyone's life but really these little middle school disappointments help you deal with the bigger ones that come later on in life.

Now you all probably think that I am crazy when I say that disappointment is something that we all need. But honestly, if no one was ever disappointed about anything, what kind of people would we be today? I feel that without disappointment, no one would be able to handle being let down or how to handle certain situations. Disappointment is healthy every once in awhile. It teaches us all a lesson that even though things don't go our way that we can get over it and that being a little sad about something not working out is okay. It also motivates us in a way to strive for something better or to try again. When you apply for a job and don't get it you don't just give up, right? You're disappointed, but it motivates you to try again somewhere else or rewrite your resume and apply again. When you applied for a college and didn't get in you didn't give up on that, right? You were disappointed but you retook your SATs and reapplied. It teaches us to persevere and not to give up. To get up when you've been pushed down. Yes, disappointment may suck, but it is the one thing that we all need and makes us better people.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
