Valentine’s Day is celebrated from the rock times of ancient Rome and later remarked in 5th century by Pope Gelasius that February 14th is the day to be celebrated in the honor of a soft-hearted Valentine who was sentenced to death for performing secret marriages. The first written Valentine greetings appeared in the 15th century and by 17th century people started a tradition of exchanging cards or letters. It is since then, Valentine’s Day started spreading out to various parts of the world.
With its significance for love and romance, today, Valentine’s Day is one of the most popular celebrations in United States and in many other parts of the world. According to a survey by a popular television channel, more than 62% of Americans celebrate by sending greeting cards and flowers, candy and gifts or by having romantic dinners. 1 Billion Valentine’s cards are sent each year from all across the country to their loved ones.
Despite the history of love and romance, today’s digital world has brought us many pathways to convey Valentine greetings. Some write open letters to their Valentine using the social media and some blog or vlog. There are some specific couples who have been on the internet to spread their joy and romance with a mix of creativity and fun.
After a long research, we finally classified and analysed the best digital valentines of the year 2016 and prepared a list on the most famous digital Valentines (from among the famous social media couples). The criteria we used to gather them is as follows.
- We considered several social media platforms such as Facebook, Youtube, Vines and Instagram just because we wanted to have a broader scope and to search for some awesome digital couples all around the world.
- We also tracked some Hashtags like #valentine, #valentinesday, #love, #happyvalentinesday in order to gather any other interesting social media valentines that we missed.
- From among the couples who presented themselves on social media, we considered those that are actually in love.
- We also considered the content restrictions based on age and made sure that their posts on social media are not limited to a specific age group or gender.
- We then measured the response rate based on their fans and depending upon the views, likes and shares they got.
- Our research is however limited to couples who have been either elected/awarded by a recognized company or an institution such as a media/awards agency/conference that is popular online.
- We excluded movie stars and corporate celebrities just to make sure we are giving enough room for the new comers with a lot of love in the digital age.
- We also discarded dating or dating apps to make sure our post is not content restricted.
- For convenience, we only measured the overall year’s digital activity of boys (who are considered as the Valentine for their girls) disregard of their activity on this Valentine’s Day 2016.
