Dear Winter,
I know you're coming; I didn't even have to invite you. I'm writing this letter to you because you have no chill. I know you're jealous that everyone loves fall more than you. You started snowing this year when I was out apple picking — not cool, man. I'm sorry but you're just going to have to accept the fact that we're not quite ready for you yet. Autumn is the perfect month for basic girls, you gotta let me enjoy this time of PSL and Bean boots. I know you're coming soon but can you please be good to me this year?
I know I sounded a little harsh and I'm sorry. It's just that I'm not quite ready to have my hair turned to straw if I walk outside with wet hair. I'm not ready for eyes to turn into icicles while walking to class. I'm not ready to get my socks wet from your frozen snow. I'm not ready for my fingers and toes to freeze at night. You gotta give me some time, Winter.
Although there are lots of things that I would rather avoid all together, I can't wait for hot cocoa in bed with a good book, while watching the snow flurries. I can't wait to snuggle up on the couch with big wool socks and a fluffy blanket. I can't wait until I can wear big ugly sweaters and earmuffs and giant cozy scarves. I can't wait for making snowmen, sledding down hills and waking up my roommate at midnight to make snow angels and have a snow ball fight (sorry, in advance). I can't wait for Christmas carols and holiday scented candles from Bath and Body Works. I also can't wait for warm soup and ABC family movie marathons.
I went to Starbucks today and didn't get pumpkin spice — I know, shocker. I was so excited that your drinks were there, Winter! Peppermint mocha comes at a very close second to a classic PSL. I know I was mean to you before, and I'm so sorry about that. I just wasn't ready to admit the fact that you're right around the corner. Winter, I know I say I hate you but that's not true. You can have your ups and downs just like any relationship. I'm not a Winter person, but there are a couple of things on my Winter bucket list:
1. Learn to Ski/Snowboard.
I know, I go to college in Vermont and I have only every skied once. In fact, the one time that I did was in eighth grade and I pizza sliced down the mountain and complained that my feet hurt/were too cold until my mom bough me a giant cookie. Everyone at Crotched Mountain hates me that's for sure.
2. Enjoy the Snow.
Last year, I was a freshman and living in a dorm building. For some reason I had this deep hatred for anything snow. I did not want to go outside. I did not want to look at it. I was a total loner in my bed, accomplishing nothing but an entire Netflix series. (I was a little late on the "Orange is the New Black" wagon) But now my goal is to find the prettiness of outside during the winter. The icicles and the snow and even the chilly wind.
3. Make Holiday Cookies.
Living off campus this year, a really great advantage is having my own kitchen and my own oven. I'm not going to take that for granted at all. I'll turn into Martha Stewart in no time, whipping out sugar cookies like it's my job.
4. Help out the homeless.
This is the hardest time of the year to be homeless. Living in a big city, I see homeless people on my walk to school everyday. I'm going to stock up on hand-warmers, mittens, hats, scarves, wool socks and maybe even $5 Dunks cards for a warm drink. I might even throw in some of those holiday cookies that I mentioned previously! Nobody deserves to be cold and alone. It makes you feel good by doing good.
5. Smile and Stay Positive.
I will not let seasonal depression get me down this year. I will make an effort to be kind to others, and kind to myself. It's easy to fall into bad state when the weather isn't looking too good, but I'm not going to let that stop me this year. My mom always said, you create your own destiny. And this winter, I am destined to be happy.
Thank you, Winter, I know I was mean to you earlier but I can't wait to see you soon. Just give me a couple more weeks of Autumn before you take over the next six months.
