A Letter To Two Girls Who Will Grow Up In The Trump Presidency
Carly Dryden

On November 8th of 2016, the United States of America chose it's 45th President. And I am sure you already know, because I am sure you both are smart young women, that person is Donald Trump.

I sit here today, November 9th of 2016 at 9:47 in the morning, still in my pajamas, with tears running down my face thinking to myself, how do I explain this to Molly and Quincey Ann? Two little girls who mean the world and more to me and who may never remember this exact day, but will grow up in the world created from this day. Two little girls who will grow up hearing the man who is supposed to be the leader of our country calling women pigs and whores and sluts. Two little girls who should know that they are not those things and that the man who holds the highest honor in our country should not be able to get away with saying those things.

I am sorry. I am sorry this country failed you. I am sorry that this country took 12 steps backward instead of 20 steps forward. I am sorry that we have elected a man who talks down women's worth. I am just sorry.

There are no other words I can think of other than "I am sorry."

A President should never belittle women. Never. No matter the circumstances. You are both strong, young women. You are leading women. You can make a difference in the world. And you will, in your own ways. Whether that is just through giving kindness to a stranger or through finding the cure for cancer or maybe becoming the first woman President? You can and you will make a difference in this world, I know it.

President Trump may not say it, but I will. You are strong. You are smart. You have worth. You will make a difference. You will change the world. You are better than this. You deserve better than this. And one day, you will make sure that women do get better than this. Our generation may have failed you now and the 75 million registered voters who decided not to vote may have failed you now, but you will grow from this. You will grow, you will prosper, and you will shatter that glass ceiling. Hillary Clinton gave it a nice big crack. Just go up there and shatter the fucking thing. Just shatter it with all your heart and might.

Hillary Clinton may not have been the first choice for many Americans, but she did do something pretty amazing. She was the first woman to run for the Presidency of the United States of America. Twice! She opened doors for women everywhere, including you two.

"And to all of the little girls [who are watching this], never doubt that you are valuable and powerful and deserving of every chance and opportunity in the world to pursue and achieve your own dreams."

We will grow, we will prosper, we will become better in spite of this.

Do not look to Trump for an example of what being a leader is. Look to your fathers, two amazing men who work hard for your families. Look to your grandfather, one of the kindest and most genuine men I have ever met. Look to your little Ventura, farming family, filled with hard working men who want NOTHING but the best for you and to help you grow and succeed. And hey, even look to your crazy Uncle Chris if you need a good laugh sometimes!

Don't let Trump hold you back my sweet girls. Fight for yourself. Fight for your rights. Fight for your country.

Like I said earlier, I can't think of anything to say other than I am sorry. When I think about your sweet smiles and the twinkles in your eyes, all I can think is how in the world will I tell Molly and Quincey Ann that we let this man run our country? And as I sit here writing this, 11 hours later, with tears still streaming down my face, I have no clue how I will. Other than telling you this is our motivation. Change is needed. And I know you two. I've known you two since the day you were born. You are firecrackers. You will make that change in the world.

I love you sweet girls.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
