A Couple Things I Need To Remind Myself
Makenzi Smith

From time to time, I get a little too caught up with everything that's going on in my life such as school and work and in result — like normal, I get frustrated and overwhelmed which causes me to become stressed when in reality all of this could be avoided completely. Here are some things I need to be reminded every now and then.

1. You don't have to prove anything to anyone.

You know what you do and don't do. Wasting your time on someone's perception of you is really irrelevant. Get that through your mind and accept it.

2. Don't strive for success mainly just because you feel like you need to prove people wrong.

Success is success. Whenever, however you achieve it — make sure it's not out of spite and resentment. Do not work that hard just because people say otherwise and have it thrown back in your face at then end because it's something that you don't even want.

3. Be upfront whenever a situation bothers you.

You are literally the only one that is in control of your own life. If you feel like certain people are trying to hinder you from that, if their intentions aren't good or don't benefit you in any way — there should be no reason as to why these people are still around you. You know how you get. Cut them out of your life.

4. When people disrespect you, come back even harder.

You have one slick mind. You have the tendency to see people's intentions right off the bat. People think just because you keep to yourself, they can take advantage of you to the best of your ability. Use that to yours.

5. You deserve more than you think.

Don't settle just because it makes you comfortable. You know that the best memories are made by stepping out of that comfort zone. Do so, girl. You got it.

6. If you want it bad enough, get it.

You are more than willing to get what you want. You are only aware of your own strengths and weaknesses.

7. What you define as "success" or "perfection" is completely different than others' definition.

Remind yourself that not everyone is in the same scenario or has the same goals as you. When you tell anyone your intentions, you're going to get a ton of opinions thrown back at you. Another man's trash is another man's treasure and in this situation, what you consider treasure could be perceived as "trash" to someone else, or vice versa.

8. Patience is key.

You expect so much in such a short period of time. You assume that just because you did this one deed, people and/or life owes you another. Stop working just to "show off". This is for you — keep it that way and reward yourself in the long run. It will pay off one day, but just make sure the focus is on you.

9. Prioritize your life and be careful.

Time with friends, family and etc. have to be prioritized as much as you don't want that. You're balancing school and work both full time — your schedule is full enough. Be careful with what you're doing, but considerate at the same time.

10. Not everyone was raised like you.

Consideration, honesty and generosity are not maintained automatically. This is something that needs to be taught. The attitudes of others shouldn't affect you in any way. Keep it moving.

11. Stay strong.

You've made it this far. There's no need to give up now. It will all pay off in the end. Remember why you started.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
