The University of Alabama’s Interfraternity Council will host the 2015 Costa Greekfest Friday, August 22 at the West Commuter parking lot by the softball field. The event raised over $40,000 last year, and IFC is looking to raise even more this year. Proceeds go to the Billfish Foundation and local Tuscaloosa charities. This is the seventh year that Costa Greekfest has been at UA and the event has always been a success. This year, Greekfest is featuring Moe. with Swayze and Mother Funk.
Mother Funk will be the first to perform. The band originated in Tuscaloosa a few years back, finding its inspiration from bands such as: Tea Leaf Green, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Slightly Stoopid.
Shwayze, a rapper from the West Coast, will follow Mother Funk. His first single, “Buzzin” reached as high as #46 on the Billboard Hot 100, and his second single, “Corona and Lime,” reached to #23 on the Billboard Hot 100, and as high as #3 on the Itunes store. Shwayze always produces a great show with a ton of excitement. He mainly performs on the West Coast, but has made an exception to come to Tuscaloosa, and should be ready to put on a good show.
The big act of the night is Moe. The band formed at the University of Buffalo in 1989, and has enjoyed wild success over the years. They have worked with Warren Haynes and Govt. Mule, and have played at popular venues over the years, including: Woostock in 1999, opened for the Allman Brothers and The Who, The Hangout, and have been to Bonnaroo Music Festival five times. In fact, Moe. is on Rolling Stones’ Top 10 jam band list. Moe’s fans are coined as “moe.rons,” and there should plenty in attendance Saturday night. Moe. is known for their live shows, producing a unique kind of concert experience.
Vice President of IFC, Frank Schottgen said:
“IFC is excited about having the event this year, and to put emphasis on donating the proceeds to the local Tuscaloosa community. We’re really excited about Moe. We’re really excited about the quality of live shows that Moe. produces, and we think the students will enjoy it as well. We are also very grateful that the proceeds go to the community that gives us the opportunity as students to enjoy it."
"Every IFC and Panhellenic sorority contributes to Greekfest, and without them this event couldn't happen. As an event, Greekfest is intended to bring all students together to kick-off a great year, and to be a part of the biggest philanthropy event of the year. There were as many as 8,000 students last year, and we look to have even more this year.”
