Speaking as someone who has previously been in a long distance relationship and having watched many of my friends try to concur this type of relationship themselves, I have quickly learned that the convenient relationship will always trump the long distance relationship. Whether that convenient relationship is some other person or it is no one and your significant other's convenience is being by themselves, no matter what, convenience will always win.
I am not here to say that you won't try that long distance relationship, but I am here to say that it's one hell of a fight to keep it going. You find yourself racking up your phone bill due to the constant texting and the everyday call or FaceTime that you demand just so you don't go insane by not seeing their face or hearing their voice. The amount of hours you spend sitting on a plane if you can afford to fly to see them every few months, if you're lucky enough to even accomplish every few months.
Eventually, every few months turns into just holidays (because for some reason those have been deemed most important) and that everyday phone call or FaceTime turns into "when you have the time" (which is never). No matter how much you love the person you're with, naturally the distance begins to squeeze its way into your relationship creating a further and further gap each day you're together.
We can't forget the individuals who are so terrified of all of the above things happening that they refuse to even kick start the relationship in the first place (honestly, I don't blame them).
Regardless of how your long distance relationship ended or never began at all, the next challenge is sitting back with a bag of overly buttered popcorn and watching them fall in love with someone else or live a happy life being their independent self. That someone else or independence is their convenient relationship and deep down you damn well know that they will always love you more. It's like walking into the movie theater expecting to see a romantic movie (where the guy breaks up with the girl, but realizes he made the biggest mistake of his life), but instead you're slapped in the face with the crappiest soap opera you've ever watched because no matter how hard the characters try they're never going to be together.
Not every story has a happy ending where the guy and the girl fall in love forever and end up dying sleeping next to each other in a well kept nursing home. If you haven't figured out that The Notebook is unrealistic, you need to reevaluate your life, please.
So, as soon as you can come to terms with the fact that life isn't perfect and it will probably take a long time for it to work out in your favor, sit back, relax, and enjoy that chaotic soap opera.
