College should not just be about getting a higher education but also about experiencing life. It is sad to think of young adults — practically kids — going through four years of gruesomely hard work only to be rewarded with the promise of more work. While I do believe that college is mainly about education, I disagree that it should be one's sole purpose. When choosing a university don't just look at it from an educational point of view, but also from a social and geographical point of view as well.
I'm not implying that you should make sure that there are at least a dozen bars within a 2-mile radius of campus, crazy tailgates or to only consider "party schools." In reality, this is a small part of the college experience. It should be about trying new things, meeting new people and learning valuable life skills that cannot be obtained anywhere else but on a college campus.
I also believe that it is important to put a little bit of distance between yourself and home - if only to fully understand just how hard life as an adult can be. Also, if there is a city or region that you could possibly see yourself having a successful career and a happy life in 10 years from now, then try to choose a school in or possibly around that area. You will probably meet some lifelong friends that could end up living right down the road years later! It can also make things easier in the future after graduation because you will already have friends as well as be comfortable and familiar with the area.
With all this being said, I would like to emphasize how important I think getting a higher education is. College is so much more than parties, 8 a.m. classes, and dorm life. Finishing and getting a degree should be your number one priority. Study your ass off, work hard, and make your parents proud. However, understand that it is okay to have fun while you are there too!
