To The College Student With Mid-Semester Depression, You Will Make It Through

It can seem like you are falling into a deep dark abyss, but I promise you aren't the only one feeling that way.

We are two months into the semester and I think we all know it isn't going to get easier. The assignments, essays, homework, quizzes, exams, and laundry are all piling up. The 24 hours we get each day seem to be getting shorter and shorter. The bags under our eyes are getting darker.

It is easy to feel like all of your professors are out to get you. This makes everything else seem like a chore, even if it is the daily task of putting on pants or calling your parents. It is easy to feel like you are continuously falling deeper and deeper into this dark abyss.

I don't want to say, "It is going to be OK" or "You've got this," because that is so cliche even though it is true. You will get through this semester just like you have gotten through every semester up until now. You will find a way to cram for that exam and you will get that essay in even if you submit at exactly 11:59 p.m.

You have to step back and put everything into perspective. You are not the first college student to take 15 or more credit hours. You are not the first college student to have multiple exams and assignments in one week. Your professors know that you have a life and that you can't spend 23 hours each day only studying for their particular class.

So so so many college students have come before you and felt like they would never survive midterms and that they would have to drop out. Those same college students are most likely your professors, your parents, CEOs of huge companies, and the people running our country.

You have to remind yourself that your professors do not want you to fail. They genuinely want you to learn the material and do well. They spend hours behind the scenes preparing for class, making these assignments, training TAs, and grading all of your work.

They had to study just as you are right now so that they could teach this to you. If you can start to see your professors as your partner in crime rather than the enemy, your entire attitude will change.

You will want to go to class, you will feel better asking questions, and you will find the confidence in yourself to do well. Personally, I start by introducing myself to my professors and calling them by their first name. When I can say, "Come on Leslie what are you thinking?" or "Ah, Kirk you really got me there," in the least it makes me smile, but it also makes them seem more equal to me.

You know what you need to succeed.

If it means going to a study center and finding a tutor, go for it! If you need to stick a note on your mirror telling you you're amazing, then fill your mirror with sticky notes! If you just need to rant to someone and cry it out, that is 100% acceptable! If you just need to hear someone say they believe in you, then call your mom! If it means staying at the library all night and showing up for your exam in your pajamas, no one will judge you! If you want to take all morning doing your hair and makeup so you feel like the boss walking into your presentation, do it!

It can be easy to feel alone when you're staring at a computer screen or a textbook all day. You get so caught up in your own head that you forget that there is a world of people around you. You feel like you are all alone, but everyone is in their own "midterm bubble."

You are not a failure.

You are doing everything you need to do.

You CAN make it through.

You WILL make it through.

College is only a few years out of your entire life. This assignment or exam will not determine the fate of your entire future. You need to enjoy college while it lasts, even though it seems impossible at times.

So, listen to Beyonce and do what you have to do!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
