One of the most stressful times of the semester is upon on, and that is schedule season. Within the next few weeks, some students will be required to meet with their advisors and discuss what types of classes they need to take to stay on track. Then comes the time where you must submit your class preferences at the right second in order to ensure a spot in the class.
Yes, we all have required courses we must take for our major, but why not branch out and take some classes that are stimulating for your brain but also fun. I mean, if you are paying all of this money for school, you might as well throw a few fun classes in there. Here are some courses I have taken so far that I have found useful and enjoyable.
Modern Philosophy
Being a Communication major, I know how tedious it is to read works by philosophers such as Aristotle and then try to relate it to aspects of life, but a class about modern culture and philosophy focuses on contemporary issues in our everyday lives and how we should go about them. This class will cover everything from friendships to the question of how and why people lie. It will force you to think about different aspects you may encounter in life and how to use what brilliant philosophers said in the past and apply it to today's issues.
Human Sexuality
When you are a young adult in college, it is important to learn and be aware of your body, especially when it may come to sexual activity. This class will explore everything from childbirth, a child's sexual development, and what STI's are and the symptoms to look for. While some of these may not be issues that one will face in their time at college, it is still important to be educated about these things.
Dynamics of Addiction
Addictions are all around us in today's society and this class takes a peek into some of the major ones. You will get to learn about alcohol, drug, gambling, and sex addictions as well as the "triggers" that can set these off. There are also a lot of in-depth videos shown in this class that create a visual for these addictions and how they work.
Public Speaking
While this one may not seem fun for people, it is definitely something important to take. Public Speaking skills are ones that everyone should have after graduating college due to there being so many jobs out there that require their employees to give presentations or speak to a large number of people in a work environment. This class requires you to give three speeches over the semester while gradually building you confidence when it comes to presenting information to people. I can honestly say that I feel that this class alone has helped me develop more of an outgoing personality.
Obviously these are just suggestions of mine, but you should always take at least one class a semester for fun. The good news is that while it may not be required for your major, it will still help you out and give you credit.
