8 Classes You Definitely Have To Take At Virginia Tech

Sometimes your class schedule just works out so that you have a few free electives in which you can take fun classes. Before you graduate, there are some strictly "Virginia Tech" classes that you need to experience so you can brag about it to all your grown-up friends down the line.

1. World Regions.

If you haven't heard about this class, you have probably been living under a rock for the past few weeks/months. This class is taught by the legendary John Boyer, and his videos are nothing short of entertaining. The class is also structured pretty fairly; if you stay on top of your work, it's pretty easy to get an A.

2. Theorizing Beyoncé.

Who wouldn't want to learn more about Queen B? This class, located in the Africana Studies department, is a good way to get the feel of a different department while learning about how Beyoncé rose to fame and what her phenomenon is.

3. Floral Design.

Personally, I have heard this class is a little on the harder side, so if you decide to take this class, take it seriously and go to class. The best part of this class is that you get to take home your arrangements once you are done with them — and who doesn't love fresh flowers sprucing up their apartment?

4. Geography of Wine.

Another great class taught by Boyer. Picture this: a class where you can get points for going to a weekly free wine tasting and writing about it on a blog while earning other points just like you would do in World Regions. This perfect class is a must-take for anyone who is 21; just make sure you are, because if you aren't, you are limiting yourself to what points you can get.

5. Brewing Science and Technology.

Not really a wine aficionado? Then take the equivalent in a beer class! If you have some hidden dream to want to open your own brewery and make some moonshine, then this is the class for you! This class is under Food Sciences and Technology and has a reputation of being a very interesting and engaging class.

6. Indoor Plants.

Another horticulture class, but this has great benefits. You get to learn how to grow, and actually grow, everything from succulents to different herbs. Once they reach a certain growth level, you get to take them home and grow them yourself. Also, both the professors are great, and sometimes one even brings their dog to class on test days to help relieve stress.

7. Creative Writing.

This class is definitely a nice break from those dense science classes. From writing poetry to a real funny story about your life, this class just helps you to take a breather and get a little creative. I would highly recommend taking it with Aileen Murphy if you can — she grades your attendance, participation and completeness so that you don't feel like your literary work is lacking.

8. Fiction for Young People.

This class is bound to be terrific strictly because of the professor. Nikki Giovanni is the professor, and during her time at Virginia Tech, she gave the speech after our shooting that rallied the whole school together. She truly is an amazing woman, and if you ever get a chance to interact with her, even if it's just to shake her head, you should never pass it up.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
