I'm not going to lie to you and say that when I was younger, I dreamed of turning 18 so that I could finally vote. Sure, it's a big step in the general direction towards adulthood, but honestly, voting wasn't that important to me.
Of course, I want to vote now that I'm old enough, but I'm still not that excited to cast my vote to elect the next president. Why? Because I want neither to be president and here's why:
Donald Trump:
Oh, Trump. We all laughed when we first heard the news. Donald Trump running for president? What a joke! But our laughs turned nervous as the campaigns continued and he was named the Republican nominee. Suddenly this "joke" was looking like a possible reality.
My issue with Trump is not his policies, he has some (emphasis on some) good ideas that might improve America. Like how he plans to "quickly and decisively bomb the hell out of ISIS", or lower taxes and refinance debt and I'm all for his plan to make paying off student debt easier.
But my list of discrepancies with Trump far outweighs the positives. One of the things that Trump and I don't agree on are his racist views that encompass a whole group of people based off of specific cases. Such as Trump's generalization of undocumented Mexican Immigrants when announcing his candidacy in June of 2015: "they're bringing drugs, they're bringing crime, they're bringing rapists". Is there an abundance of illegal Mexican immigrants in the U.S.? Yes. Is the crime rate heightened by crimes involving these illegal immigrants? Yes. Is every Mexican that enters the U.S. illegally going to sell drugs, murder or rape? No. I agree that there needs to be a new program to monitor those entering our country, but we can discuss this without being racist and offensive.
Also, some of these ideas are pretty great as in Trump's slogan: "Make America Great Again" but they're also very general. How are we going to "make America great again"? By winning. Oh. Okay. That's like telling someone that all they have to do is be better. No specifics, no plan. Just be better, k? (also, when did we become un-great??)
Trump's logic is a mystery that would take much longer than I'm willing to commit to understand. For example:
Also, does this man have a PR team?? And if so, who decided to give him access to the internet, more specifically Twitter??
My main problem with Trump could stem from my experience with English and Journalism. It has been beaten into my head that words are powerful. That we should utilize strong verbs in order to make an impact and to "economize" our words. i.e. use fewer words to make a larger statement. This is a practice that Trump doesn't believe in apparently. I'm sure you've all heard of the infamous red hat speech. If you haven't here's a snippet:
Hillary Clinton:
My main problem with Hillary is that she's a liar. I don't know if she just lies for fun or if she honestly has amnesia and is just confused, but for whatever reason, she just can't seem to tell the truth. Some of these lies were just fibs about her personal life, claiming that her family was broke after they left the White House. As a truly broke college student who currently has $7.38 in her bank account and has been living off of rice for the past month, I wish I could be $12M "broke". But that's just a cry for attention, just like her claims that her daughter, Chelsea, was jogging around the Twin Towers on 9/11.
But nothing can top Benghazi. Lying to the public and more offensively, lying to the families of the victims in the attacks to shift the blame away from herself. She needed America to trust her so that her presidential campaign wouldn't suffer, so in order to gain that trust, she lied. Makes sense right?
Not to mention she has changed her views on numerous issues during her time as a senator, first lady, and presidential candidate. It seems like she will say anything or change her mind about anything to get a vote. And her attempt to appeal to the hip new trends is actually gag worthy.
But the main issue that I have with Hillary isn't that she's a woman, but because that's the only reason why some will be voting for her. Yes, it'd be amazing to have a woman president and I have full confidence that a woman could succeed at being president, but not this one. A number of times I've heard "you're a woman but you're not voting for Hillary?" is enough to make my brain melt. These people are so caught up in breaking new ground and witness the first female president take office that Hillary could stand in front of them and say she hates America and still get votes.
So who will I vote for?
Who is the lesser evil? The racist, loud-mouth celebrity-turned-politician? Or the inconsistent, power-hungry liar?
I honestly have no idea.
