Chase a Dream, Not a Job

What I've learned along the way.

Chase a Dream, Not a Job

First lady, Eleanor Roosevelt spoke the words, “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.”

A majority of people are often scared about graduating college and not finding a job. They seem to choose a major they think will offer them the most money or the highest hopes for finding a job right out of college. And while that is great planning for the future, what if those are the only reasons you chose it?

Many of us growing up are unsure of what we want to do with our lives, which is normal not to know. Through High school, I imagined myself being a sports lawyer, sports psychologist, physical therapist for athletes, a teacher (mainly so I could coach sports), but when choosing a major for college, settled upon dental hygiene for the sole reason I knew I would get a job after finishing my degree. After realizing dental hygiene was not a career for me because of the extensive science courses, I changed it to Healthcare Administration… a job that would offer a secure amount of money.

After applying to schools that offered that major to transfer into, I realized I was not interested in that career at all. So, I changed it again. I did a lot of self-reflection and realized that I love sports. I always have. I love the thrill of the unknown; the fact that anyone can win on any given night. I had always wanted to somehow remain a part of it, so I chose to study Communications/Public Relations at Stockton University. I knew it offered me a wide range of opportunities in the field, with flexibility if I did not like the specific path I chose. Luckily, through the semester, I am learning that I chose the right major for me.

We are all going to go through life, enduring the ups and downs, but if you can wake up each day and enjoy what you do, the downs will not seem so low. I chose to chase a dream, instead of a job, because at the end of the day, a dream is what drives me.

I advise anyone unsure of their future to choose a path that leads to not only success, but also happiness. Believe in your dreams; believe that they will come true. The future is in a day, a month, a year, and ten years from now. In that time, what dreams will you chase?

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
