Cat Cafes have been around since the late 90s, mainly popping up in Asian countries with Europe eventually following suit. In 2014, California finally opened up its own cat cafe called Cat Town Cafe, with the goal to not only have these cats loved by adoring guests but maybe to even find a forever home. However, these cafes haven't caught fire around the entire country just yet. But don't worry, for those who want to enjoy the paw-some feline company with some properly made Southern sweet tea will now get the chance because Georgia will be getting its own cat cafe this summer.
Happy Tabby Cat Cafe hasn't let out an official opening date just yet but has alluded to opening up in summer 2016 on their website. According to Creative Loafing, the founder, April Hill, quit her job last November and decided to open up the most purrfect kind of cafe since the South doesn't have one yet. The cafe will have about 20 furry friends and can hold up to 20 cafe patrons. Those odds sound pretty meow-nificent for any feline-loving friend.
Though picking up the cats will be forbidden, customers can have the opportunity to take ANY of these cats home since they are up for adoption! Hill is partnering up with Fur Kids Atlanta to try to get as many cats adopted as paws-ible. Like most cat cafes, there will be a $5 cover charge to pay for the cat's various needs. Afterall, what good is a cat cafe if it doesn't have any toys to play with?
Happy Tabby's Facebook page says the location will either be by the Krog Street Market or the Ponce City Market in Atlanta. Either way, I'm just hoping they don't pro-cat-stinate, because I don't think I can wait much longer. Luckily, the Internet is also very excited for this new cat-ddition to Atlanta. Over 2,500 people have liked Happy Tabby's Facebook Page and 91 people followed the Twitter account, and those numbers have been steadily growing every day. Though it can be hard for "specialized" stores of any kind to succeed, the growing popularity shows promising signs for the Happy Tabby.
As someone who is an avid cat-lover, I am so incredibly excited for this to come to Atlanta. On top of it being centered around coffee, you get the added bonus of furry friends that are up for adoption. Though some of the cats in the cafe will be kittens, a majority of them will be adults, giving them more of a chance to be adopted. As it is with any animal, adults aren't usually the first to be picked in adoptions so hopefully, this will help some older cats find a furr-ever home. What a great way to spend any Caturday!
