Is there really a feeling of "Christmas Spirit"? As kids we all felt it throughout all of December. We all knew Santa was coming and we were all hoping we wouldn't be on the naughty list. But as we get older some of that cheer seems to wither and fizzle out. We learn some unsettling news about the big man in red, we don't get excited to wake up to mysteriously delivered presents. But does that really take away the joy of Christmas?
What is Christmas really about? As kids we would all say it's the season of giving, but we really meant it was the season of others giving to us. Despite the greediness we felt as children, the holidays were a merry season for all. Those years when it was snowing on Christmas Eve, a fire was crackling, and we would watch "A Christmas Story" with our families, and we would be anxious for Santa's arrival, but that wasn't the soul source of the merriment.
The true meaning of Christmas is whatever you make it to be. It is the season of giving, families will spend cherished times together, and wonderful memories will always be made with or without the influence of magic and mystical creatures. Winter is a cold and dry season, but Christmas brings in that warmth and coziness that we so dearly crave. I don't care how many times I see "The Polar Express" but it will never get old and I will always feel the Christmas spirit all around me every single time I watch it.
We all know an Scrooge though don't we? What can we do to spread some Christmas Cheer? Do not sing loud for all to hear... that only works for Buddy and a few others. But spend some time with them, see what they like, ask if they need any help, or if they have one wish for Christmas and could you aid in that wish coming true. No matter how bitter or anti-Christmas someone can be, spreading joy and happiness can bring some bit of endearment to anyone.
This holiday season we should all remember to be thankful for what we have and what we receive. We also need to cherish the time we spend with our family and friends. Enjoy the bright and creative lights your neighbors put up, and compliment them if you get the chance. Take the opportunity to give one more time than you receive and smile at everything. The magic can still be there if you want it to be.
