The snow has fallen across the upper east coast, the lights are up and the snowmen are set in front of the houses just waiting on people to gaze upon them. Well, at least the ones that haven’t fallen over from the wind or lost hair from the sleet.
We all can't wait to spend our time playing around in the snow, decorating the tree, baking cookies, and most of all gathering around the fireplace with our loved ones on Christmas Eve in anticipation for the next day.
There are four ways that we can help people get into the Christmas spirit.
1. Saying Merry Christmas
This saying has been going on for the past hundreds of years. I feel like over the past few years I feel as if we have fallen for the whole banter of trying to get CHRIST out of Christmas. That’s why you hear so many people who choose to say Happy Holidays or Merry X-mas because they feel that saying Merry Christmas is offensive to those who don’t believe in Him. I would scream it from the rooftops every day until Christmas, despite what people would say or think.
2. Bake Cookies For Neighbors
This is a fun little idea to involve your friends or kids in. Kids love getting their hands dirty and spending time with their family and friends. Not everyone has time or money to bake cookies with the hustle and bustle of Christmas shopping, so why not surprise your neighbors with a plate of cookies. This shows appreciation and community between you and them. Community seems to be lacking in the past years. I blame politics.
3. Invite Your Friends Places
If you have friends who are normally too busy to go out shopping and they suddenly have the same day off as you, take that chance to hang out, grab a coffee and catch up over some presents and good conversation. We can both agree that sounds better than texting your best friend and engaging in an online shopping spree. This season is a season that brings people together. You can help with that by getting your friends involved when you go out to look at the Christmas lights, picking out a Christmas tree or shopping for secret Santa gifts.
4. Random Acts Of Kindness
This is one thing I absolutely love witnessing when I’m at work. Because of the Christmas season customers have been coming through the drive-thru and requesting that they pay for the person behind them. The look on the faces of other customers bring a huge smile to my face. We all don’t know the stories of people so it’s nice to give more than expected. I have also seen this act of kindness during finals week at the universities. Not only does it make peoples days better but it also creates a line of people paying for each other in the drive thru.
During this season, don’t forget to try to make someone’s better with a surprise, a smile, or a random act of kindness. You never know what they are struggling with.
