Cal Poly lacks school spirit. I think most of us can count the amount of times we've been to a Cal Poly sporting event on one hand. But why? We should be embracing our Mustangs, just like any other big university would. Here's 10 reasons why we should be attending athletic events.
1. It’s free!
If you aren’t already aware, ALL regular season home games are free for students that have a valid Cal Poly ID. Do I even need to list nine other reasons?
2. It gives you an excuse to tailgate.
There is nothing quite like tossing the football, sipping on a cool beverage, and firing up the ole grill on a college football Saturday. Cal Poly even offers designated tailgating spaces (on South Perimeter and Cuesta Avenue) that you can purchase on football game days!
3. Our teams are actually good at what they do.
The “I wish Cal Poly had good sports” excuse just isn’t going to cut it anymore. Cal Poly Athletics have won 15 national championships since 2005 and it doesn’t look like we are slowing down any time soon.
4. It strengthens our relationship with the community.
If you have ever attended a Cal Poly sporting event, then you most likely have seen the hundreds of families and community members that come out to support the Green and Gold. If students take it upon themselves to show up and support in a respectful and unified manner, then the entire community will join in our efforts.
5. The players and coaches deserve our support.
The entire athletic department puts countless hours into practices, film sessions, workouts, and everything in between. The least students can do to show our support is to cheer them on to victory!
6. We can make going to sporting events cool.
The more people who go wild for Cal Poly and cheer on their fellow mustangs, the more exciting the competition and campus will be come game day.
7. The entire student body is looking for something to get excited about!
If you show up to the next sporting event excited and ready to root on Cal Poly, you are bound to find Mustangs that wish to do the same.
8. Literally there is nothing else going on.
What else would you be doing on a Saturday at 2 p.m.? Okay, I know the answer, but still, what other excuse do you need to go to the game?
9. Buck The Gaucho’s!
There is nothing better than a sports rivalry. The Blue-Green rivalry between Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara is by far one of the most exciting in the nation.
10. Sports bring people together.
The Cal Poly family is vast and growing. The more students, faculty, community members and alumni that come to support the Green and Gold, the better.
