A Letter To My Brother (And All Freshmen) On Move-In Day
James Cotumaccio

Dear Thomas,

As you go off to college, I wanted to write this letter to you. I know we’ve been separated before when I went to college last year, but it feels different for some reason this year. Maybe because I knew I’d see you in a few weeks at our cousin’s sweet sixteen and then our other cousin’s wedding and then family weekend. I don’t know the next time I’ll see you – maybe Thanksgiving? Hopefully not. Maybe I can sneak away for your family weekend. But either way, it’s the unknown that’s making this time around feel different. I don’t know how often I’ll talk to you because now our schedules, homework and studying may conflict. I don’t know how often I’ll see you being three hours away from each other. But I hope we do.

You’ve been my best friend since I was 16 months old. We’ve never spent more than three weeks apart, even when I was at Fairfield. And even though I was initially upset to hear you chose Scranton over Fairfield at the last second, I can now say that I truly am happy for you. As long as you’re happy, I’m happy for you.

Now my advice for you and all freshmen. It’s totally normal to miss your family and friends and routine of being home. It’s totally normal to call home at night or when you’re walking to class. It’s totally normal to have a rough first few weeks. But you can change that! Sign up for clubs at your activities fair and go to some club meetings until you find a couple you like. Don’t lock yourself up in your room; always leave your door open and do homework in the lounges and library to meet people. Find your perfect balance between school work and your social life. Go to your professors’ office hours, even if you have to kiss up a little bit. Choose your battles with your roommate. Text your family members and high school friends. Take risks. And most importantly, be yourself, because there’s no way you won’t have tons of friends if you just stay true to who you are.

So congrats on all your accomplishments so far; I know you’ll continue to soar in college. Even though I will miss you tremendously, I know you’ll be fine without me. Just remember to text me about how your day went and about the TV shows we watch. I know college is a huge transition, but just embrace it! I’ll really miss you a lot.

Love,

Your Best Friend

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
