You Are Not Broken And This Is Why

The not yet versus the here I am.

You Are Not Broken And This Is Why
Laura Peck

"We so profoundly believe in our brokenness that we can't see the ways in which we are already whole." - Rebecca Scritchfield RDN

I could really just leave everything with the above. It says so much and says so much truth.

But I will expand for the sake of processing, both for myself and everyone else.

When you look at yourself, or think about yourself, or see a picture of yourself, what do you see?

Do you see how your eyes tell the truth about your insides? Do you see a smile that is connected as well? What about a body that displays your condition?

Do you see how friendly you are? How creative you can be? How much fun you have with your hobbies?

Some way or another we are taught to look at ourselves and see what is broken, to see what needs to be fixed and then to go on and fix it.

Okay yes, nothing is perfect and we can always improve, but what happens when we only focus on what we could improve?

Then we end up living in a pit of "not yet" instead of flying away with "here I am!"

Maybe someday you will heal.

Maybe you'll heal from a physical wound like a broken bone or a chronic illness or scab in a difficult place.

Maybe you'll heal from internal pain, the kind that shows up with a specific song in a specific place during a specific activity or word.

We can hold on to hope that we will heal, physically and emotionally. Hope is important.

But hope doesn't leave us on the ground.

Hope gives us the audacity to fight and to fly.

But hope cannot take flight unless we see the ways in which we are already whole.

Maybe we hurt in one area, but we were created to be alive in another area, so profoundly.

So now we can look at ourselves with a new pair of eyes. Ones that aren't blinded to the hurt and brokenness, but ones that see it all in a giant mosaic.

A mosaic that is whole and completely together.

A mosaic that is beautiful and captivating.

Examine your mosaic in all of it's wonderful and seemingly randomness. It is not random. Each piece plays a part in the entirety.

You are already whole. You are already you. You are already who you were made to be.

So stop striving and reaching and trying so hard.

Let go and examine the mosaic made by the One who has eyes that see deeper colors and more intricate patterns than we could ever imagine.

And live fully in your wholeness.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
