Bring Back Passion

Putting time into the right things.

Have you ever been at a certain place and just wondered what exactly it was that you were doing there?

Maybe it wasn't your choice that you were present, you were going through the motions, or you just mentally weren't there at all.

This is what I like to call: The "half-ass" disease. You're doing something, maybe even a productive activity, but you have no idea why you're even doing it anymore. It's like you're almost just in your own head questioning why you're doing this certain thing which isn't either satisfying you or bringing you any kind of joy.

The reason we keep doing these types of things that completely bore us is the same reason certain adults get stuck at that certain day job that they end up despising. Those people who dislike their jobs may financially be comfortable, but their time on Earth is being wasted by just going through the motions of a certain job they despise.

Someone told me the other day, "I don't really like business, but I'm majoring in it because it'll actually get me somewhere in life." This theory sounds stable and it's not an awful decision, but what is it that causes a person to choose this over something that they're passionate about.

There's way too many things that lots of us are doing every single day without really paying much attention to any of it. There's so many things we spend precious and valuable time on that genuinely don't serve any purpose to us.

I want to spread the word to bring back whatever it is you're passionate about. Don't take any safe option, do what it is that you want to do. Take that chance on whatever makes your mind go haywire. Major in something that people say may be useless in five years.

If it is something you thoroughly enjoy, you can't go wrong. We only have a certain amount of time on this Earth; therefore, why would you spend any of it going through the motions?

By no means does this say to drop all responsibilities and just do whatever you'd like. However, if you are spending a majority of your time doing something that means absolutely nothing to you — why are you doing it? If you're stuck in something that seems to be half there, why are you still in it when you could have the full thing if only you'd take that leap of faith?

Sure, it all sounds good on paper. And to be honest, I have several safety nets regarding things that need to be dropped or removed from my life to be replaced with what it is that means the most to me in my mind. But, it's the fact that you must choose to do whatever it is you can't get out of your head.

Only then when you focus on it, will you be living a life of true joy and passion versus a passive regular everyday life.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
