Doing What You Love Starts Now

Tomorrow isn't guaranteed.

Doing What You Love Starts Now

I know what it's like to do something because you feel like you have to. I was told, "Wow. If you don't think these classes are very challenging then you must have a knack for the business field." Well, I thought to myself, if I'm so fortunate to be "good" at this subject, then I should pursue it. After all, it will pretty much guarantee me a high paying job one day. So, I sat there day after day in classes that made me absolutely hate college. The amount of stress I put on myself began to show mentally, emotionally and physically. About a year and a half later, on some random day, I was sitting in Accounting and realized: What the f*ck am I doing in here? I want to spend my life writing, not crunching numbers. To this day, people still tell me I made a mistake switching majors, and I'm okay with that. I realized that waiting around for someone to tell me it's "okay" to chase after what I want isn't going to get me anywhere.

Being captured is a beautiful, freeing thing. Captured by art, music, sports, cooking, history, technology, travel, science, business; whatever it may be, let it capture you. If you are lucky enough to feel captured, you owe it to yourself to embrace it. Feeling captured by something gives us the freedom to pursue it. Leaving your passions aside will lead you to a life of what-ifs. Every single time I sat there in Accounting, I would think to myself: Well, what if I tried writing just one article? Where would that take me? It brought me somewhere where I can be proud of the things that I've done.

"You can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something - your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life."

- Steve Jobs

I'm not saying that you should to choose between being a "starving artist" and a "successful businessman," I'm not saying that you should even know what you want to do with the rest of your life, I'm saying that you should find something you love and strive to be the best at it. There are certain names that stand out when you hear them; Picasso, Oprah, Bill Gates, Angela Merkel, Mark Zuckerberg, Beyoncé, Gordon Ramsay, Michael Jackson, James Franco, Ellen DeGeneres, Nikola Tesla, etc. These people didn't get to where they were because they did what others told them to do. They had a dream, they pursued it, and they succeeded.

I realized that I needed to stop trusting that everything would pay off "one day," because tomorrow isn't guaranteed. What's the point in living if I don't enjoy my life in this very moment? Every day, I strive to reach a point where I can say that I am happy with everything that I've done today. I have no idea what could've happened if I didn't decide to completely change my path in college and in life, but until I can connect the dots looking back, it's safe to say I'm much happier with where I'm going so far than I was before. And that, to me, is priceless.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
