Breaking The Stereotypes

There are many stereotypes in this world today. Each of these stereotypes unfortunately gets criticized in some way: the nerds get blamed for being geeky, overweight people are ridiculed for eating too much, and the depressed get underestimated by "just being sad." The curly haired kids get judged as toy poodles, short people are laughed at for not reaching the sky, but at the same time tall people get glares for ducking under the door frame. Our world has become everything but the democratic free world our leaders make us out to be. We have surrounded ourselves with hatred that envelopes our brains forbidding us to speak our genuine opinion in a positive way.

I'm currently wearing a black dress that goes slightly above the knee, with tights, boots and a warm cardigan. I can only imagine how many people have looked at me today and thought: slut. This is our world people. Why is it that people overlook our beauties and seek the imperfections? Why is it that every environment we walk into is filled with judgement and ridicule? Why does it feel like the world we live in is a prison of hatred we can never escape.

I hate to be brutally honest with you: but it's us.

We are a dominant species, I understand that. But we shouldn't be dominant with our powers to judge and hate but instead with our powers of intelligence, beauty, and positivity. We as a nation should build a camaraderie that builds each other up, not tears each other down. We should deal out compliments rather than insults and laugh with people, not at them.

The rather sacred confession that many don't realize is that this community building starts with you as an individual. It starts with you taking a moment to look in the mirror and flaunt at your beauty. I understand how hard this may seem, because I cannot help but look at the impurities in my face, the frizzy hair, and the jelly rolls every time I see my reflection. I'm pretty positive that I'm not the only one that criticizes her reflection, yes?

But listen: you are worth so much more than your waistline, the gap in your teeth and the widow's peak. There's a heart of gold placed inside every human being that's unfortunately immensely vulnerable to corruption in this world. But our goal as an individual is to conquer the hatred and love yourself. When you love yourself, you're able to spread it among others. Your able to make other people smile, laugh, and realize their perfections outweigh their imperfections. When this power of positivity and optimism is spread, our world will actually be the free world our leaders convince us it is.

Stay positive, spread joy to others, be yourself, and most importantly: you are loved.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
