I recently came across an article titled “Body Positivity Is Great And All But Not When It's Ignoring Health Concerns.” The article was interesting, and definitely brought up some good points about how at some points certain body positivity advocates put their size over their health. The article overall made me quite sad though, because I realized that a lot of people don’t see the full extent of the body positivity movement.
The general population’s experience with the Body Positivity movement is normally centered around body size; however, it expands to include body hair, skin color, gender identity, ability, and so much more.
This misconception of the Body Positivity movement can be a result of who ends up in the mainstream media, which tend to be a lot of models who have become body positivity advocates. While each of these advocates has a powerful story to share, there is also a vast amount of body positivity advocates on Instagram who share their own unique journey with self-love every day.
This article’s aim is to open everyone’s eyes to the variety and inclusivity of the Body Positivity Movement and, hopefully, a way to spread the positivity and self-love the movement promotes.
Here are a few of the amazing people you can find on Instagram (and many more media outlets) who represent a variety of what the Body Positivity Movement can represent.
