Thanksgiving break has come and gone. With that, Americans all over the nation have eaten enough food to keep them full and warm for the remainder of 2016. Along with this, they have came and conquered the chaos that is Black Friday, the most hectic shopping day of the year.
While some love the thrill of racing through crowds and waiting on lines at 6 o'clock in the morning, and others happily avoid all shopping establishments for the day, retail employees across the nation are forced to leave their families, ignore the tryptophan telling them it's time to sleep, and drag themselves to work.
As someone who works in retail, I can tell you that Black Friday is one of the most stressful days of the year. Here are just some of the things that we retail workers have to put up with throughout the day of Black Friday, as told by my friends over at Parks and Recreation.
1) Pulling into the parking lot in the wee hours of the morning...
Not only realizing that you should be sleeping, but that you actually have to work instead.
2) When the doors first open
Nothing like getting trampled on for a good ol' doorbuster.
3) When something isn't scanning / doesn't have a price label
"That means it's free right?" - some smirky customer
Not today, not today...
4) When it's time to persuade the customer to make a purchase
Basically, you're out of arguments as to why this person should buy the discounted item, but you have to try make the day's quota.
5) Realizing that it has only been an hour
Not knowing if you'll ever make it through the rest of your shift, still warm and full from the meal the night before.
6) When the store is at full capacity
Screaming over the crowd to talk to customers at the register and not being able to hear your own thoughts.
7) Having to step into the back to take a breather
All that shouting, selling, cleaning, and fake smiling is a lot harder than it looks.
8) When the holiday music and the lack of sleep finally take it's toll
9) When the door busters end
Finally, the sound of your thoughts return and you can speak at a normal volume again...
10) When it's time to come back from break
Just. Five. More. Minutes. Please.
11) When the shift from death is finally over
That moment when you're finally able to sit down
