I know that Bill Maher's current brand of liberal political comedy is one that fears insulting no one, not even those on the same side of the aisle-- it's part of what drew me to his schtick in the first place as he was willing to say what was "truly" liberal without fear of pissing off the base.
So when Maher insults modern progressives for their highly-inclusive views on trans people (starting at 1:25)...
zero-tolerance for Islamophobia...
hyper-sensitivity to microagressions...
...and the like.
I'm sure he thinks it is just another drop in the bucket of people he has offended. But I think there is something he has failed to realize about the specific sort of insults listed above, which is that they are hurled at progressive views championed mainly by millennials.
While this may not seem like the biggest of deals, for the man who always claims to be speaking the most truthful form of liberalism, it is clear that he is beginning to lose touch with the new wave of progressivism becoming canon in America. In other words, his age is showing. And from a semantic stance, that also means that he is becoming more "conservative" as conservatism, by definition, "seeks to preserve things as they are, emphasizing stability and continuity."
With John Oliver, Stephen Colbert, and Jon Stewart (and subsequently Trevor Noah) as the new faces of liberal, political comedic talk shows, and some of the figures who brought such progressive issues to the forefront, it may seem easy to write Maher off completely. Maher is not, however, entirely lacking political relevance. Young liberals need a political voice that is unafraid to question establishment conventions; they need to be challenged. We should not aspire to meet the assumptions of our elders, as the coddled and naively closed-minded youths. The problem lies in the fact that Maher has taken to the opinions of his supposed opposition in order to argue against the Democratic espousal of values. Because I think Maher's opinions would be received far more favorably if he didn't sound like Trump when he attempts to question the religious validity of Islam, or like Trump when he feels he has the right to joke about the genitalia of a trans individual over a cis one.
So I have this to say to you Bill, please don't grow up, stay a little younger with us, because we need a voice like the one you claim to have, not the one of another crotchety old man. Although if you did have to be like another old white guy, may I suggest Bernie Sanders?
