Sidney Jones- CB Washington- Yes I know I talk about Sidney Jones a lot. But the numbers speak for themselves when in 14 games this season, Jones was only targeted 48 total times and was not scored on all season long. If by some miracle he’s around at 32, it’s a no brainer for the Pats.

Zach Cunningham- ILB Vanderbilt- If Dont’a Hightower does end up leaving in free agency, Cunningham could be an excellent replacement. He led the SEC with 125 tackles this past season, 10 more than the next guy, Dick Butkus award winner Reuben Foster.

Haason Reddick- ILB Temple- Another potential Hightower replacement, Reddick is an excellent tackler and also has something that Hightower was never really able to develop, the ability to drop into coverage. Reddick impressed many scouts at the Senior Bowl and while he played at a smaller program at Temple, Bill Belichick is never afraid to take a chance on guys that he believes can play.

Tim Williams- OLB Alabama- If it weren’t for his off field issues, Williams would be talked about as maybe going inside the top 10-15 picks of this draft. Williams is an elite pass rusher whose only real on the field concern is he is not a true 3 down linebacker, but neither of these things have ever stopped Bill Belichick from taking a chance.

Joe Mixon- RB Oklahoma- Yeah, that guy. I hate what he did off the field as much as the next guy but for this analysis I have to put it aside because the Patriot Way would fix any issues Mixon might have. If it weren’t for his assault on a female student while at Oklahoma, we would hear Mixon’s name mentioned just as much as Leonard Fournette and Dalvin Cook’s. Mixon is an amazing, talented combo back who can run for power and speed, pass protect and catch the ball out of the backfield who would be an ideal fit in New England if LeGarrette Blount decides to leave.

Adam Shaheen- TE Ashland- Who? The Rob Gronkowski of Division 2 football. Over the last two years at Ashland, Shaheen has caught 126 passes for 1,670 yards and 26 touchdowns, and with Gronkowski’s health a legitimate concern, and uncertainty on Martellus Bennett’s future in New England, Shaheen might not be a bad option, as he is widely considered the 3rd best tight end in the class and this is before testing at the NFL Combine.

John Ross- WR Washington- I know what you’re saying “Yes Roman we get it, you like Washington.” But this is a no brainer for the Patriots, who could move Ross all over the field and find success with him. His blazing speed and strong hands would be a great weapon for Tom Brady. 81 catches for 1,152 yards and 17 touchdowns speaks loud enough.

Solomon Thomas- DE Stanford- Now I realize that he won’t be around at 32, and this would only be possible if the Patriots made a trade, like a trade of Jimmy G to the Browns for the 12 overall pick to get him. But the measurables for Thomas are off the charts, 6’5 with long arms, he’s fast off the edge and is drawing comparisons to one of the best D-linemen in the game, Aaron Donald. Still considered raw by most, Thomas would be a great fit.

Takkarist McKinley- DE UCLA- Already drawing comparisons to Demarcus Ware, McKinley does one thing, get to the quarterback. An uber athlete, he has an excellent first step and enough strength to impact the opposing running game as well. Like Thomas, he is still considered very raw, and Bill Belichick would be able to work very well with him and develop him into someone like Trey Flowers.

Quincy Wilson- CB Florida- This is a very defensive heavy class, especially at the cornerback position, which is rare. Wilson and his running mate Teez Tabor both make excellent cases to be the best corner in the draft, but Wilson is a much better natural coverage guy compared to Tabor who is much more physical. Wilson is a much better fit for the Belichick system.

Jabril Peppers-??? Michigan- Now let’s get one thing straight here, I am NOT a fan of this pick. He’s too small to play linebacker, and not good enough in coverage to play safety, which is why I have question marks where I’ve been writing positions. He is a Swiss army knife athlete who knows how to compete and do some things well, and that to me just seems like a Belichick type of player.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine.
