We all know that March has some pretty great holidays, such as St. Patrick’s Day and sometimes Easter. However, many people do not know about all of the other awesome holidays that you could be celebrating as well!
1. March 1
Kick off the month by celebrating National Peanut Butter Lovers Day! This day is devoted to the love America’s favorite sticky spread. It is eaten in 90 percent of American households and even has its own phobia! Arachibutyrophobia is the fear of peanut butter getting stuck to the roof of your mouth. So make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and feel like a kid again!
2. March 3
Make someone smile on National I Want You to be Happy Day. Although the origin of this holiday is unknown it reminds us to be more selfless. In a world where everything is always about “me, me, me,” we all need a reminder to do nice things for other people and not expect anything in return. This can be as simple as sending a funny e-card or bringing your best friends their favorite Starbuck’s drink (wink, wink).
3. March 6
You are going to want a glass of milk for Oreo Cookie Day. On March 6, 1912 the National Biscuit Company (Nabisco) introduced the Oreo Cookie to the American public. The recipe has not changed much since then and has allowed Oreo to easily become the most popular cookie in America. Fun fact! If every Oreo cookie every made (that is approximately 345 billion cookies) were piled on top of each other, the stack would reach to the moon and back more than five times.
4. March 8
Y’all are going to flip for this. It is National Pancake Day. From seven o’clock in the morning until seven o’clock in the evening the IHOP will be offering a free short stack of buttermilk pancakes for every customer. IHOP started National Pancake Day in 2006 to raise money for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. Although the pancakes are completely free, they would like customers to leave a donation. In the nine years that they have been celebrating, IHOP has raised more than 20 million dollars! As broke college kids, you won’t need to be buttered up much to participate in today’s celebration.
5. March 12
Grab your favorite hoe and celebrate National Plant a Flower Day! Flowers make the world a more beautiful place and studies show that they are good for your health as well. Being around plants is said to increase work productivity, reduce stress, and help you have a more optimistic outlook on life. Another great option for dorm rooms and apartments are succulent plants. They are often just as beautiful as flowers and are a whole lot easier to take care of.
6. March 14
Channel your inner Martha Stewart for Pi Day! It is a celebration of both the dessert and the number (3.14). Pi is the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter, it is a constant and will never change. In 2009, Congress passed a resolution to officially declare Pi Day a national holiday. It has even been incorporated into school curriculum to teach students about pi and engage students in the study of mathematics. It is also a good excuse to test out the most ridiculous pie recipes out there.
7. March 18
Everyone has times when they do something that they find extremely embarrassing or uncomfortable. National Awkward Moments Day reminds us that it is okay if we called someone by the wrong name, waved back at a person who was not waving at us, or could not figure out whether to high five, shake hands, or hug.
8. March 19
People often say that laughter is the best medicine, so make sure you get a good dose of it on Let’s Laugh Day! According to studies, laughing has both psychological and physiological benefits. Psychologically, laughter reduces anxiety, loneliness, stress, and depression and increases self-esteem. Physiologically, it enhances mental function, stimulates circulation, improves immune system defenses, and increases the production of endorphins in the body. Who doesn’t want more endorphins in their body!?
9. March 22
National Goof-off Day the perfect excuse to throw caution to the wind and, assuming you will not get in trouble, neglect your responsibilities for a little while. Some good ways to celebrate today would be to stay in bed and watch Netflix, take a hike, go shopping, have a dance party or spend a little extra time to do some self-care.
10. March 30
Although we all know that spring break is the best part of the spring semester, eventually it does have to come to an end. I am in Control Day is the perfect way to get organized before the worry sets in surrounding finals week. Some good ways to make the most of this holiday is to fill out a daily planner, make a to-do list, clean your dorm room or apartment (we all know that we could stand to do this one), or work on channeling your inner Monica Geller. If you celebrate this holiday, you could be sitting pretty while everyone else is trying to get their ducks in a row.
