Throughout the time span of 1990-1999, many blockbuster hits were released in theaters for moviegoers to enjoy. With a wide range of Steven Spielberg films to animated Disney classics, the '90s were the time to hit the theaters. So in honor of this decade, I've compiled a list of the most notable films of the '90s:
1. "Jurassic Park" (1993)
Billionaire John Hammond created a theme park populated with dinosaurs off the coast of Costa Rica. He later had a group of paleontologists travel to this island to give him their stamp of approval before the grand opening of the park. However, they quickly discover that there is no easy way to maintain species that have been extinct for millions of years and face the dangers of dinosaurs on the loose. A Steven Spielberg classic, this blockbuster hit will have you on the edge of your seat.
2. "Pretty Woman" (1990)
A rich businessman (Richard Gere) hires a hooker (Julia Roberts) for the night while on a business trip in Los Angeles. The two begin to feel the deep connection between one another and battle the obstacles of living in two opposing worlds.
3. "Independence Day" (1996)
When aliens invade the earth, an engineer (Jeff Goldblum) investigates the situation. With connections to the President of the United States, he soon finds himself teaming up with a Marine Corp pilot (Will Smith) to save the planet before it's too late.
4. "Forrest Gump" (1994)
Tom Hanks stars in this classic film about a man named Forrest Gump with a low IQ. Despite this disadvantage, Forrest finds himself serving in Vietnam, speaking at an anti-war rally at the Washington Monument and setting a world record by running across the country for years. All in the meanwhile, Forrest copes with the dramas of love and discovers some shocking news in the end.
5. "The Matrix" (1999)
A man hopes to discover what the Matrix is, only to find himself sacrificing everything in the process. He fights a battle against intelligent secret agents and is forced to team up with the world's most dangerous man.
6. "The Lion King" (1994)
In this Disney animated classic, a young lion named Simba adventures with his father, Mufasa. Simba's uncle becomes jealous of Mufasa's hierarchy and tries to gain power by killing off both of them, only to have his plans foiled and have to face Simba fighting for his homeland.
7. "The Sixth Sense" (1999)
A young child becomes frightened when he receives visitations from ghosts that only he can see. He visits a trusted psychologist (Bruce Willis) to uncover the truth behind his problems, only to face answers that are explainable.
8. "Terminator 2: Judgment Day" (1991)
In this rare sequel that surpasses the original, a 10-year-old boy, John Connor, finds himself facing a terminator sent back in time to kill him. A less advanced terminator (Arnold Schwarzenegger) was also sent back by the resistance in an attempt to save John. The stakes are high as John knows he must live to lead the inevitable Judgment Day, the war against machines, to victory.
9. "Toy Story" (1995)
In "Toy Story," we adventure with Woody, Buzz Lightyear and their friends as they come to life when humans are not present. However, when their owner moves houses, they find themselves trapped at the hands of a dangerous neighbor and must find their way back to their owner to before it's too late.
10. "Groundhog Day" (1993)
A weatherman (Bill Murray) finds himself reliving the same day over and over again— Groundhog Day. Determined to move on with his life, he must reexamine his priorities to escape the time loop.
11. "Home Alone" (1990)
When a young boy, Kevin McCallister, wishes to have no family, that wish comes true when he is accidentally forgotten home alone when his family takes a trip to Paris. However, Kevin finds himself responsible for saving the family house when two con men try to rob them.
12. "Titanic" (1997)
This tragic film is directed by James Cameron and based on the true story of the sinking of the Titanic in 1912. A love story played out by Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet dramatizes the effects when the "Ship of Dreams" hits an iceberg and helplessly sinks to the bottom of the North Atlantic Ocean.
13. "Beauty and the Beast" (1991)
When a curse is sentenced upon a prince, he must find true love before the last petal of his rose falls, or be poised to spend the rest of his life in the form of a Beast. In hopes of finding his true love, he holds a beautiful village girl, Belle, hostage. However, as soon as Belle begins to fall in love with the Beast, threats from her village jeopardize their chances to live happily ever after.
14. "The American President" (1995)
As the President of the United States hopes to be reelected for a second term, he falls in love with his lobbyist, Sydney Ellen Wade (Annette Bening), dropping his approval ratings. Now, he is forced to face the choice between love and his career.
15. "Ghost" (1990)
Sam Wheat (Patrick Swayze) is madly in love with his girlfriend (Demi Moore) when he is betrayed by a friend over a shady business deal. When the ghost of Sam finds out the his murderer will be returning for his girlfriend, he must seek the help of a psychic in hopes of saving the life of his loved one.
16. "What About Bob?" (1991)
A psychiatrist (Richard Dreyfuss) takes on a crazy new patient, Bob Wiley (Bill Murray) before going on a long family vacation. When Bob is unwilling to wait for his new psychiatrist to return from vacation, he tracks him down, only to drive his psychiatrist mad with his crazy stunts.
17. "Aladdin" (1992)
When a boy named Aladdin, who is living on the streets, frees a genie from a lamp, he finds himself gaining a friend in the genie along with his three wishes. However, Aladdin's desire to make a princess named Jasmine fall in love with him goes against the rule book, so he will have to get creative to win the love of the princess.
18. "Free Willy" (1993)
When an orphan vandalizes a theme park, he will have to serve time working there to make up for his actions. The young boy meets an Orca whale, who he names Willy and quickly becomes closely antiquated. However, when others find out about this bond, they try to make a profit off the trained whale, while the boy struggles to find a way to free Willy.
19. "Jumanji" (1995)

Two kids exploring the old mansion they moved into, play a game called "Jumanji," found in the attic. They quickly discover this board game is no ordinary game, as it unleashes a dangerous world of adventure upon them. The only way to make things go back to normal is to finish the game, but it's threatening adventures lead them to all kinds of trouble.
20. "Twister" (1996)
A professor (Helen Hunt) and her soon-to-be-ex husband (Bill Paxton) team up with a group of scientists to test a device they created which will gain powerful data on a tornado. However, the two will have to get dangerously close to the path of a tornado to gain the information they need. When another group of scientists steal their idea for the prototype, they will have to race against their enemies to gather the most accurate data first.
21. "Happy Gilmore" (1996)
Happy Gilmore (Adam Sandler) is a hot tempered hockey player with no talent for the sport. By chance, Happy uncovers his hidden talent for golf and only utilizes it in an attempt to win enough money to buy back his grandmother's house before foreclosure.
22. "A Bug's Life" (1998)
A hopeless bug named Flik seems to be holding his colony back when he accidentally destroys the food meant to pay off tyrant grasshoppers. Now, the colony will have to make twice as much food to get back on track. Determined to do something right, Flik sets out to find help to stand up to the grasshoppers and save his colony from disaster.
23. "The Lost World: Jurassic Park" (1997)
In the first movie, we watch a group of adventurous scientists travel to a mysterious island and discover dinosaurs in a soon to be theme park. However, this time around, the dinosaurs are invading San Diego. What would you do if you saw a dinosaur in your backyard?
24. "Men in Black" (1997)
Will Smith stars in this action comedy working for a secretive, unofficial government agency. While investing some recent close encounters, they uncover a terrorist from another galaxy and must save the city from corruption.
Though the '90s are known for pop music and hideous outfits, the movies created during this decade are ones that are unforgettable.
