One of the most exciting parts of going away to college is living on your own with your roommate. Chances are, for the first month or so at least, you two will do everything together: from finding your classes, to eating your meals, to just venting each night about how glad you are the day is over and that it's almost the weekend. Some people choose to go random with their roommate, some meet their roommate at orientation and decide to dorm together then, and others are lucky enough that their best friend wants to go to their school and get to dorm with them.
My roommate has been my best friend for 10 years now, and I'll always remember the text she sent me saying that Seton Hall was her first choice school too. The planning started almost instantaneously-- what bed sets would we get, considering we just had to color coordinate, when our schedules allowed us to get lunch together, and so much more. We are now almost four months into our college careers and I couldn't be more grateful to have my best friend turned roommate by my side each day.
When your best friend becomes your roommate and you move into school you'll find yourself telling everyone who he or she is and how long you've known them. A lot of the time, people won't care but you'll make sure you let them know anyway. Perks of knowing your roommate before moving in include the fact that you'll probably attend almost every event together during orientation weekend, making tons of mutual friends, which means you'll never be dissatisfied with who's hanging around your dorm room. You'll avoid stalkers together, and also approve of who the other will date based on his or her track record in the past.
When your best friend becomes your roommate, you will always have someone to attend an event with. Be it The Newlyweds Game-- Roommate Edition (which you're bound to win), concerts, or even your first frat party. Your best friend is already trained in how to be the perfect wing-man, and knows just when it's time to leave the party.
When your best friend becomes your roommate, you don't have to spend time getting to know one another and learning each other's boundaries because you already know all of that. If you're close enough, you can even save money by doing laundry together, and you know which foods can be shared and what isn't to be touched.
When your best friend becomes your roommate it's like having a personal cheerleader living with you 24/7. You'll know all of each other's due dates, and you'll help each other to study. You may even find yourself learning something new for a class you don't take, like what a cephalopod is. When you get that A on the exam you studied for the whole week, he or she is the first person to find out, and a celebration is definitely in order. When you change your major and things are getting stressful, they'll be the one who hears everything first, and they'll be the one to take you for a cup of coffee to cheer you up.
When your best friend becomes your roommate, you don't need to go out every night, every weekend. Sometimes, sitting in and eating Ben and Jerry's while watching White Chicks is good enough after a long, stressful week. Your Snapchat stories will probably consist of funny videos of one another doing yoga or making Beyoncé music videos, and your friends at home will wonder what even goes on in your dorm room.
When your best friend becomes your roommate, you're bound to experience college in a way that others will not. It's almost like taking a piece of home to school with you. When you go home, you'll eagerly look forward to going back to school to tell your roomie everything that happened over the long weekend. Living with your best friend will strengthen your relationship in an unexplainable way, and if you make the decision to move in together, you're certainly in for a memorable year.
