An Open Letter To My College Best Friends
Kara Thorp

To my best friends,

Thank you. Thank you so much and then thank you some more for how amazing of people you are. Without you, I would have lost my mind by now or ended up in jail. Thank you for being my people. For talking all hours of the day and never getting tired of each other. And thank you for most importantly being the sisters that I have always wanted. I love all of our moments we have spent together; laughing until we cry, or crying until we laugh. You are all so precious to me, and I will love every single one of you forever. They say that you meet your best friend in college. Well I haven't met just one best friend, I've met multiple best friends. These girls are always there for me through the really great times and the really bad times. I'm thankful for the group texts, the phone calls, the Skype dates, the swim meets and so many good times we have shared with one another.

I love that I can call any of you at any time of the day and you'll answer. Whether it's just to catch up, or bitch about boys, I can count on all of you no matter what. Some days we may really hate this place, but the school has brought us together. For that I am forever grateful of the university I picked to attend because if I hadn't, then I wouldn't have any of you.

You guys have seen it all. You've seen me stressed, happy, drunk, upset and every other emotion in the book. I know you guys have my back no matter what. You've helped me through multiple breakups and are always there to tell me how much of a loser he is and if you see him on the streets he'll receive a nice punch in the face from you, which I know for a fact would be true. If I am stressed over school, at least one of you is there by my side helping study for that final that counts for 50% of my grade and reassuring me I am going to be an amazing teacher and that I can get that A. And when I am so upset that I don't even think I can get out of bed, you all rally the troops and come fighting for me, making me forget what the issue was in the first place. Because of all of you, I know I am loved.

What I love the most about my best friends is that they're always down for a good time. It can be a Wednesday night and all we have to do is get together for dinner to make my day better. We'll gossip over the food that is so unrecognizable that the game is to guess what it is. Any time I need to go for a drive, I can place my money that at least one if not all of you are ready to perform a concert and scream the lyrics to Dej Loaf or any 2000's hip hop song at the top of our lungs, laughing the whole time. Any Friday or Saturday night is prime time, going out and doing the dumbest things or even just staying in ordering John's and having a movie night. You all make me forget my worries or give me a reality check when I'm being a total diva. I treasure all our memories we have together and cannot wait for so many more to come.

To be completely honest, it makes me so nervous that we don't see each other as much as we would like. Whether it's from transferring, or not living around each other during the summer, we might drift slightly. But I know there is no one else I want to plan bridal parties with even if I don't yet have a man to fit the part. We all have such a tight bond that there is nothing that can happen to separate us. I know we will be friends forever because that's what we're good at. We live for nights we may not always remember. You all, I know, are just a phone call away and I want you to know so am I. I've never in my life had friends as great as you and for the final time, I want to thank you all for being the best friends I could have ever been blessed with.

With love,

Your semi-dysfunctional, mildly crazy best friend.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
