Anyone wants to find an excuse to get a pet, whether it be because the pet is cheap, they found it on the street or they just really wanted it. There’s another excuse to get a pet, though, one that we may not think about too often- pets can benefit our health. Here’s a list of five health benefits of owning a pet.
1. Social needs.
If you live alone, then getting a pet may be just what you need to keep up healthy socialization. Sure our animals don’t necessarily talk back, but just having a friend by your side who you can interact with is a great way to keep your social health up. Having an animal is great when speaking because they really are the best listeners. Sometimes pets are the best shoulder to cry on or vent to.
2. Exercise.
Owning a pet can actually help your health. If you have a dog, then it’s more initiative to get out and go for a walk if you need to for the well-being of your pet. People are more likely to be active with pets from playing with them and keeping them occupied. Overall, pets promote a healthier lifestyle because of the amount of energy they have and want to burn off.
3. Establishes responsibility.
Many of us received pets as children with one major rule: to take care of it. Owning a pet makes you take responsibility for it, which can improve overall independence. Being responsible for a pet also increases the amount of things you take accountability for other things in the future. Having something to be in charge of is important because it can teach you not just how to command something, but also respect it.
4. Decreases stress and anxiety.
Petting an animal, observing fish in an aquarium or having an animal cuddle and sleep next to you can all be extremely relaxing. Studies prove that owning a pet can greatly decrease the amount of stress you feel. Being near an animal can reduce your heart rate and even your blood pressure giving you a more calm feeling.
5. Heart health.
Since having a pet reduces heart rate and blood pressure right away, it is an aid in decreasing the risk or a heart attack. Cholesterol is also lowered when you own a pet. Animals are also good for heart attack patients, people who have recovered from a heart attack have an increased life span that people who do not own pets.
These are just an added number of reasons as to why pets are such an important relationship. Not only does the pet benefit from being nurtured and cared for, but we benefit in a various amount of ways. From lifting our mood to some major health benefits, there are now even more reasons to adopt a pet.
