Recently I was reading "Milk and Honey" by Rupi Kaur and found a poem that really struck me.
As I read this I thought back to all of the years I had spent as a little girl playing with Barbies. I always wanted them to have the nicest clothes and the prettiest hair. I remember looking down at the dolls and wanting to look just like them when I was older-- skinny, blonde, and tan. Well, now I'm 19 and I can promise you I don't look like a Barbie, but that doesn't bother me anymore, because at the end of the day there are so many things I want to be. And pretty isn't anywhere near the top of that list.
Call Me Intelligent.
I've spent the majority of my life in school-- reading books, meeting with tutors, spending hours on essays. Ask me what I'm reading and listen to me rant about politics. A friendly reminder that beauty can fade but your mind never will.
Call Me Creative.
These articles don't write themselves. My outfit didn't throw itself together. Everyone is creative in their own way, from writing to drawing to solving a math problem. Individuality is what makes us so much more than just "pretty"
Call Me One Of A Kind.
My thoughts are my own. They keep me motivated, interested, and entertained. No one can possess the same thoughts as you, which is what makes your mind such a "pretty" place to be.
Call Me Independent.
I'm building the life that I want to live and I'm doing it on my own. At the end of the day, we are all on our own, and the ability to cope with that is incredibly admirable.
Call Me Loving
Tell me you love the way that I love unconditionally. Not everyone will have the same heart as you, but the ability to see the best in everyone is very brave.
Call Me Optimistic.
It's not easiest to face the world every day, but we all have to do it. The ones who do it with a smile are some of the strongest people you will ever meet.
Call Me Intriguing.
Every person on the planet is living a completely different life. Everyone has their own story, their own quirks, and their own interests. Figure them out.
Being called pretty used to be all I cared about, but now I want to be more. These are what I want to be and more.
