Stop Telling Pre-Nursing Majors To Change Their Major

We're all basically set in our way about this.

Not everyone knows what they want to do when they start college and that's okay; however, there are a select few people that will start out in the major that they will stay in. I am currently a pre-nursing major and I can not tell you how many times people have told me that I will change my major because of the difficulty level of the classes and the stress of clinicals.

I'm here to tell you to stop telling me that I won't be a pre-nursing major for much longer. It's annoying and here's why.

For starters, before I can even say why I chose nursing as my future people immediately rush into why they started as pre-nursing majors and changed. Everyone is different. People have different reasons for making their decisions. Some will say they chose nursing because they wanted to help people.

Most of the people that tell you that are the ones that usually change their major because they learn there are other ways to help people without being in the medical field. I know someone who switched to teaching because she saw how a teacher could be an influential person in a child's life. I chose nursing as my career path because I want to be hands-on with patients and be able to make someone feel better through care and reassurance.

If I do get to explain my reason for choosing nursing they give me a weird look. They don't understand why anyone would look at cleaning up throw up and wiping butts would count as touching someone's life. Truth is, it's not those acts but the act of being there for someone and being interested in their stories and why they need to be cared for that touches them. I crave making connections with people and learning what their story is. If they have a rare condition, I want to know how it has affected them so I can give them the best care possible. I believe if I can make a difference in at least one person's life then I have done something worthwhile.

Moral of the story here is, don't tell me why you didn't choose nursing and really don't tell me that I will change my mind. I know my reasons for picking my major and while some may disagree with them, I am pretty much set in my ways.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
