Being A Maid Of Honor

My experience as being a maid of honor for the first time in my sister's wedding!

Being A Maid Of Honor

On October 21, 2016, my older sister married her Prince Charming! I was honored and blessed to be a part of their day in general but even more so to be her maid of honor. I have been a bridesmaid before but this was my first time as maid of honor and everyone knows what great responsibility comes with this honor! Luckily, I got to share the role with my other older sister, who was matron of honor. Being the youngest sibling, I was nervous to have this role because I do not have much experience with helping to plan a wedding and I also felt as if I could not offer much wisdom since I am younger and not married myself. However, I worked hard to ensure that my sister had the wedding day she’s been dreaming about since she was a little girl and I hope I was able to do just that!

Being the maid of honor, I tried my best to ensure I made it to some appointments that involved planning and as many dress fittings as my schedule would allow. It was very difficult whenever I could not make it to something because I felt as if I was letting my sister down and failing at my role as maid of honor. Thankfully, my sister is very understanding of the fact that I am a college student and all of the bridesmaids were very involved in everything so she always had someone!

Being the maid of honor, I helped plan the bridal shower and bachelorette party. I was truly grateful for everyone’s help here as I am not seasoned at all in event planning! My other sister, the matron of honor, does this for a living. So with her guidance, I believe I was able to successfully help in planning and contributed ideas. The shower ended up being a huge success and a fun time for everyone, especially the bride which made me so incredibly happy! Considering this was the first bachelorette party I had ever been to, I did not know what to expect, but once again, a fun weekend was had by all!

Being maid of honor, meant I had to write a speech. I literally worked on this speech for months because I wanted it to be absolutely perfect. I went through the process of typing, deleting, typing, deleting, and of course the inevitable writer's block. I was so nervous that it wouldn’t be funny or sentimental enough, too long, too short, and that I would be nervous to speak in front of everyone. I made the final touches to my speech just days before the wedding and while I should have practiced more, I believe I had a successful delivery! All that matters though is that the speech hopefully conveyed how much my sister and now brother-in-law means to me, and I hope it did just that.

Being the maid of honor, on the awaited wedding day, I was so overwhelmed myself that I did not know what to do other than ensuring my sister was happy with everything and telling her how beautiful she was. I greatly enjoyed helping my sister get ready and helping her add all the perfect little touches to complete her look. She was truly the most beautiful bride! When it came time to walk down the aisle of the church and my sister was about to become a wife, I was speechless. I was overcome with emotion that all I could do was give her hand a squeeze to let her know I, along with everyone else, was here for her and so happy for her. My other sister and I tag teamed making sure her dress and veil were bustled and fluffed to perfection throughout the entire day! Finally, the last thing I had to do on the actual wedding day as maid of honor, was just have fun and dance the night away with her and everyone else to celebrate this joyous event.

Being the maid of honor to my older sister was truly an honor for me. It was difficult at times when I felt as if I was not living up to the standards of the job. At times I felt as if I had to prove my capabilities because I am the younger sister and had never been a maid of honor before. I let these emotions get in the way of my role sometimes and I wish I hadn’t. I had the most amazing experience throughout the year of planning the wedding as being the maid of honor. I could not have done it though without the help of all the other bridesmaids and family so I am very thankful for everyone’s help! I hope I was able to successfully fulfill my duties as maid of honor and help give my sister an amazing wedding day. I had so much fun and am truly blessed to have been a part of their special day! If I am lucky enough, hopefully, I will be a bridesmaid, or a maid of honor, in a wedding again someday!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
