It's summer time, which means club soccer is over, but international play is going to be gracing our televisions all summer. With Copa America in full swing, the Euros are just kicking off. If you are familiar with soccer (which I will refer to from this point on by its proper name, football) then this will serve as a refresher on what you will be seeing in the coming weeks, if you are new to football then this will introduce you to some of the big names and teams to look out for. Here are two that everyone should be watching.
The first big team to watch is the 2014 World Cup winners, Germany. The Germans have an incredible team yet again this year, and are the front runners to win the competition. Germany have a very possessive style of play, keeping the ball for a majority of each match. This is what happened to the USA when they played Germany in the 2014 World Cup, the German's had 63% of possession vs the American's 37% (for frame of reference most games have around a 52% vs 48% possession). Picking one player to watch for Germany is hard, but Thomas Muller (MF/FW, Bayern Munich) has really made a name for himself in the last few years. He was one of the best players for Germany since the World Cup, and has only improved. He is a major problem for defenses because of his ability to score goals, or play in a pass for a teammate (20 goals, 5 assists in Bundesliga). Chances are you'll get a really good look at this team, mark them down for a spot in the finals. Below is Muller's goal in the 2014 World Cup against the United States.
Another team on your radar should be France. As hosts of the competition they have home field advantage, which is pretty major in football. However, their main advantage is the two stars of the team Paul Pogba and Antoine Griezmann. Paul Pogba (CM, Juventus) is only 23 years old, but he's probably the most sought after player in all of sports. After Manchester United foolishly let him go on free transfer in 2012, every team with money has been trying to break the bank to get him. This is great for France because now Pogba is playing with his future wages in the back of his head... underneath the Minion and Pokeball shaved in his hair. Pogba is a very unique player because he can play many roles from center midfield, he can win the ball and play it back into possession, set up goals from an attacking position, and score crazy goals from outside the box. Antoine Griezmann (LW/ST, Atletico Madrid) is a different type of player, an all out attacker who scores beautiful goals. No matter what clubs win these players, we are the true winners getting to watch these incredible talents on the field. France is another team that should be making it to at least the Semis of the Tournament. Below is Paul Pogba's sweet Pokemon haircut, and his wonder strike against Napoli.
