There is a moment in everyone's life when they realize the time has come to become an adult. When I turned 20 this past June, that realization came upon me. I am a junior in college, and I have no idea how to be an adult. Here is a list of terrifying and awesome moments that happen when you become an adult:
1. When you have to start paying bills.
There comes a time in everyone's life when they have to pay for their own cell phone bill. Isn't that something that parents do? Also, the two scariest words for any college graduate: student loans. I don't think I'm ready (or financially stable enough) for this...
2. Realizing that you have to get a "real" job.
We all know that scary moment is going to come when we graduate college and have to go out into the real world—you'll be handing out your resume like free candy, and you have no idea when/where you'll have a job.
3. When your parents decide it's time for you to move out.
I really don't want to live all alone, pay rent, and cook for myself. Also, what if something needs to be repaired or there are spiders to kill? This is not okay.
4. When you realize you want to settle down with someone, but you're single.
There comes a time in everyone's life that they want a family of their own, but what if you're still single? Even worse, what if your friends are getting married and having kids, but you're still living alone with your cat or dog?
5. When you can no longer pull all-nighters.
In college, you could easily stay up until 4 a.m. or later working on a research paper, but now you think staying up until 1 a.m. is late. Also, you'll probably have to get up for work in the morning instead of having a class at noon.
6. When you have to learn how to cook.
There comes a time in every college graduate's life when they can no longer live off of ramen noodles, but they don't know how to cook. That's when you really start to regret not taking a home-ec class in high school.
Although being an adult can be really stressful, there are some perks that come with being an adult:
7. You are old enough to drink, which means you can go to clubs and bars.
No explanation needed—just be responsible!
8. Having enough money (once you get that awesome adult job), and buying your own home or a new car.
There is no better feeling than knowing that you have made and saved enough money to make a big purchase. Also, nothing is better than that new car smell.
9. Realizing that you're self-sufficient and can survive in the adult world.
Knowing that you can survive in the adult world and take of yourself is a great feeling. You no longer have to rely on your parents for everything, and they're proud to see that you can handle being an adult after all.
Although becoming an adult may be very frustrating, you will be a confident member of the adult society in no time!
