Don't forget to be thankful
Start writing a post

As a young adult, you are so caught up in your day to day life that you really forget all that you have around you. It's so easy for people to look around and see the things that other have and that they don't have and really forget all that they actually do have. It's tough to sometimes feel like what you have is enough in a world that's constantly telling us that we need to always not only have more, but to also want more.

We're so ingrained these days to always want to move towards the next thing. We're taught to keep pushing and keep working until you get to all of these goals and to the next step. Although having that ambition and motivation to want to keep moving forward is an amazing quality and a good thing to have, it's always confused with needing a tangible item or with stuff that you don't really need. How many times in your life did someone say "next thing I really want it so just be happier". It doesn't happen often because most people look at happiness as getting that next promotion or getting a new item to show off or whatever the thing may be. These things are so often confused with happiness that we forget to really appreciate what we have and to be thankful for all that we've been given and better yet, have earned, so far.

It's easy to be thankful for the big things, like those tangible items and larger moments that help you feel fuller, but don't forget to be thankful for those little things. It might be that you have the opportunity to call your parents every day, or that you have a true best friend that you know will always have your back. It might be that you're able to wake up and take your dog for a walk in the morning or that you have a job that you really like showing up to. It can be as simple as you being able to appreciate your first sip of coffee in the morning. All of those little things really add up and they're the things that are most often taken for granted and forgotten when thinking about what you're thankful for.

Don't forget to look around at the people in your life that you love, the things you get to do, the little day to day things, and really appreciate them. It's so easily forgotten that you can simply get out of bed in the morning and stretch and are given another day to like this crazy thing called life. It's so easily taken for granted and although most people don't have the mindset to be thankful for all of these little things, it definitely doesn't hurt to every now and then remind yourself that you're really lucky to have these things. It's okay to feel lucky for the little things. Don't forget that.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
