A "Basic" Girls' Guidebook

Say it with me: "I'm basic and I'm proud!"

A "Basic" Girls' Guidebook

You have comfort down to a science.

Patagonia jacket, Lululemon leggings. PINK sweats. Flannels in every color. Yoga pants. UGG's. Oversized Comfort Colors t-shirts. Baseball hats. Birkenstocks. Northface jackets. White Converse. White and great v-necks. Nike running shorts. And all of this is worn on a constant loop.

Let’s talk about food.

Favorites include: Chipotle, pizza, Buffalo Wild Wings, avocado toast, fries... and now I'm hungry.

You require Starbucks to function properly.

Coffee in general is a must, but there's just something about Starbucks that puts a little pep in your step. But really, is a PSL ever a bad idea?

It’s completely acceptable to list Netflix and naps as hobbies.

There is absolutely nothing better than getting home from a long day and taking a nap so good you question what year it is when you wakeup. And when you do eventually wakeup, there will be a few of your go-to shows in your recently watched list on Netflix. You've seen every episode of Friends, Grey's Anatomy and The Office, but it's fine.

Don’t listen to the haters, you need all the makeup.

You might have to sell you kidney on the Black Market to afford it, but whatever. You work hard. You deserve that new Too Faced Sweet Peach Palette. If you want to glow like a beautiful sun goddess, you go to Sephora and buy that highlighter you've been drooling over.

Bath & Bodyworks is your mothership.

Can you ever really have too many seasonal candles? And seriously. When does B&BW not have a sale going on? For buy 2 get 1 free, you'd be a feel to not smell like Warm Vanilla Sugar or Marshmallow Pumpkin Latte.

So is PINK.

Because 7 for 27 is life.

Instagram is to be taken seriously.

Maintaining your social media accounts is basically like having a second job. You realize you spend way to much time editing pictures on your VSCO app, but it's all in the name of your Instagram aesthetic.

You're pretty much the best friend ever.

You're BFF just dropped a bomb AF selfie? You've got her back. You'll be sure to slide in there with a "go best friend that's my best friend," five consecutive heart eyes/fire emojis or a "SLAYYY."

Get your favorite quote permanently printed on your body.

"Like, honestly, tattoos are just such a form of expression." - actual thing that was said to me by a real person

You identify more with fictional characters from TV shows more than actual people.

Be the best parts of Tina and Louise from Bob's Burgers, April Luddgate from Parks and Recreation, and Jessica Day from New Girl.

So yeah,"basic" girls' enjoy trivial things like cat videos and pizza. We're addicted to caffeine and like to go on "coffee shop dates" with our friends. We have guilty pleasures like getting together with the girls to watch The Bachelor and drink some wine.

However, all this does not mean we aren't strong, intelligent, empowered women filled with ambition. The thing is, if you like something, just like it. Be "basic," girl!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
