Are you an athlete who wants to improve your range of motion? Or maybe you need some extra help opening up before a workout or competition? Do you have a specific body part that is sore or needs some extra attention? Or what if you do not consider yourself to be an athlete, but could use a stress-reliever or additional relaxation? There is a program called ROMWOD and it is about to become your new best friend.
ROMWOD stands for "Range of Motion Workout of the Day" and although the word “workout” is in the title, it is not what you would expect. Founded by brothers Jeremiah and Daniel Head, ROMWOD was initially created as a program that would help athletes, specifically CrossFit athletes, improve their range of motion through a unique combination of yoga and stretching. Put simply, ROMWOD consists of a daily 20-minute video of an assortment of stretching poses. However, it is so much more than that and everyone (athlete or not) can benefit from it.
Starting with the "Welcome Series," the videos take you through the core poses, what these poses do for you and all other salient information about ROMWOD. Poses such as lizard, pigeon, seated straddle and saddle are staples of the ROMWOD program. There are many variations of these poses as well as other poses that are equally as challenging and satisfying. Essentially, the video guides you through each pose and the transition between poses while calming music plays in the background and a ROMWOD athlete does the poses with you in the video. After completing the "Welcome Series," you can follow the daily programming and watch the new videos posted every week.
However, part of the appeal of ROMWOD is that you can personalize it to your own lifestyle. Let’s say that your hamstrings are sore or your shoulder is causing problems, but you only have 10 minutes to spare in your day. No problem. You can search through the ROMWOD video database and filter it to find videos that work specific body parts for specific lengths of time.
But, besides the obvious flexibility and range of motion benefits, doing daily ROMWOD routines is a fantastic stress reliever. Whether you are an athlete or not, most people could use some extra time to relax (I’m looking at you, college students). Setting aside 20 minutes each day to simply focus on your breathing and your body while clearing your mind is an extremely useful method to reduce any stress that you are experiencing.
The singular drawback of ROMWOD is that it is not free. But if it’s a high-quality product that you are buying, isn’t it worth it? Paid on a monthly basis, ROMWOD costs slightly more than a Netflix subscription. Personally, I have found that it is worth every penny. Also, you can access it from any device as long as you have an Internet connection. Small price to pay for a stress-free life and the best flexibility I have ever had.
As a ROMWOD devotee, I can say that it has completely changed my range of motion as well as my stress level. Honestly, after my first ROMWOD video, I already noticed a difference. My body felt open and relaxed, as if I was ready for any physical or mental challenge. It is also extremely fulfilling to progress to new places in poses that I was not able to reach before. ROMWOD is the perfect combination of relaxation and challenge. I won’t lie, some of the poses are tough and difficult to be comfortable in. However, with focus on your breathing, your body opens and slowly but surely becomes accustomed to the new position. Also, the ROMWOD program has greatly reduced my stress levels. Balancing school, volleyball and a job creates plenty of stress for one person, but by putting all of that aside for 20 minutes each day and by just focusing on myself and how my body feels, I am able to reduce my anxiety and take on my challenges with a clear mind.
But don’t just take my word for it, ask the elite athletes who are rapidly joining the ROMWOD team. CrossFit athletes such as Sheila Barden and Chris Harris are followers, as well as Olympic hopeful Mattie Rogers. In addition to individual athletes, teams such as the Arizona Diamondbacks, the Atlanta Falcons, and even sports within Team USA are reaping the benefits of the ROMWOD programming. Furthermore, with over 3,000 Twitter followers and more than 29,000 likes on its Facebook page, it is clear that ROMWOD's base is strong and growing.
