We all know the feeling when professors or other instructors CONSTANTLY reiterate the need to ask questions. As much as it feels like nagging and a mockery of your intelligence, they aren’t wrong.
Sure, it may seem like an over exaggerated subject, but asking for help is extremely useful in life. From being in a foreign area to shopping for an item you cannot find. Questions allow you to seek answers you may not have known you needed. They could even help you discover things you didn't know about yourself.
Sometimes you can discover feelings you didn't know you longed for, like love, or a sense of belonging. Without asking questions regarding the topic you're trying to inquire information on, you'll never get to know the true meaning of why you’re asking the question.
For me, I knew it was okay after I struggled in school with socializing and focusing in class. With the help of my parents and teachers, I was able to see a specialist to help target my exact needs.
After receiving the treatment I needed for my attention deficiency and recently, my anxiety, it has become easier for me to reach out to specific people for specific subjects. These include my personal struggles as well as those regarding academics and my overall well-being.
Outside of the classroom, it's even more vital to ask for assistance when you need it. Though asking for help is often misconceived as a sign of weakness, it actually makes you stronger. Questions power your brain and allow you to gain knowledge and learn something new. It also improves social skills and helps us have conversations with people we may not be particularly comfortable talking to.
Growing up and branching out to do things on your own can often feel overwhelming in the sense that you have to do more for yourself. But being an independent person doesn't mean you have to put every single load on your shoulders.
Independence means you can make your own decisions, which includes reaching out for help. Your family and friends will be glad to come to your aid. Even strangers you meet when you're out in public. You never know where the conversation will lead.
The person you speak to could become a lifelong friend or even a lover. Asking questions could lead you to many possible outcomes, but you'll never know until you try.
The process is full of trial and error, but it's worth a skill that can be practiced frequently. The more questions you ask, the more comfortable you become doing so and engaging in conversations regarding the topic at hand.
