As I make my way to class every day, I can't help but notice a bulletin board full of ads: tutoring, upcoming concerts, and the latest events on the quad. However, there is one flyer that catches my eye. It simply reads "Are you happy?" Underneath, there are several tabs that say "yes" where a phone number should be. People can then easily rip the tab off and take it with them. Every day I walk past, I see more and more tabs gone and everyday my heart grows a little more full because of it.
For most, their first semester of college has passed. The fuzzy haze of the first few days, the craziness of realized freedom, and the academic and social transitions are now less burdensome. The realities of the norm have settled their graces upon the everyday. Excitement still bubbles, but no longer asserts its dominance among those it encounters.
With so many of those I know considering transferring schools, changing majors, joining new clubs and activities, breaking hearts, and getting their heart broken, this poster makes me wonder: are you happy? Have you found a foundation that strenghtens the many pillars of your life: school, family, friends, religion, love? Do you find yourself content with the everyday? Have you thought of the minuscule pleasures that aren't noticed until gone?
If you haven't, do. Ask yourself. Am I happy? One question, two possible answers. You owe it to yourself, as well as your loved ones, for their happiness runs the same path as yours. I believe everyone can be happy, everyone can claim a "yes" tab if they just ask themselves one simple question "Am I happy?" If yours is yes, then I wish you the best and congratulate your contentedness. If no, then why? These short questions lead to small steps in the right direction that bring about big results.
Am I happy? I think so. I think my puzzle piece is beginning to fit. For a long time I questioned if my decisions were right, my actions acceptable, my motivations true to my heart, and for a long time, I wasn't sure. But with the help of the most wonderful support system a girl can ask for, it's starting to become clear I have. I claimed a "yes" tab.
So, please, just ask yourself.
