An unexpected result of the presidential polls, the inauguration of the billionaire, TV star, businessman Donald Trump confirmed Trump's new office as the 45th president of the United States. He is immediately different from his successors in his rhetoric, policies and behavior. On top of his "unique" character and lack of political experience, he clearly lacks the honeymoon period which most heads of state are fortunate to have before public opinion begins to sink. Donald Trump, however, severely lacks the legitimacy of governing a nation, engendering hate and receiving little respect.
Nearly one week following his entrance to the White House, Trump signed an executive order that prompted cries across the nation. The executive order officially banned individuals from seven Muslim-majority countries, yet it eases the passage of non-Muslims entering the United States by allowing the Department of Homeland Security to make decisions based on religious affiliation.
Enraged by the blatant discrimination, protesters gathered at airports to show support for immigrants and United States' residents banned from entering the country. The ban itself has been placed in a state of limbo, being suspended by a court ruling in Washington State.
However, there is another threat for those arriving in the United States: a form called I-407 which is signed in order to surrender a green card and the legal residence in the United States. In the case of the Aziz brothers, Aquel and Ammar Mohammed Aziz, who both landed in the United States as Yemen citizens with U.S. green cards. However, while denied the presence of an attorney, the brothers were coerced to sign the I-407 forms to acquiesce their green cards under the threat that they would be banned from the United States for five years.
In another instance, an Iranian woman, Shanin Hassanpour, faced similar situations. Because she does not fully understand English, officers easily took advantage by having her sign the I-407 form to surrender her green card.
The recurrence victimizing immigrants and other individuals entering the United States is shocking and disturbing at the least. It shows that, regardless of whether the executive order reaches an appeals court, a Pandora's box has been strewn open which will ultimately take time until some order and justice is restored.
